I have never had my home burglarized here in China. However, I have colleagues in Guangzhou and in Shenzhen who have had their houses burglarized, ransacked, etc. Has this ever happened to you? Why is it that Guangzhou and Shenzhen have such a rep?

My home? No. I did however have the copper wiring striped from my building by who we assumed were migrant workers once. Does that count?
No. I keep my dog in the house. She's really good at telling me if anyone is around outside.
My Chinese Mom lives on the fifth floor and someone climbed through her kitchen window and snuck into the living room. They heard the tv and went back out the window. She was able to see the footprints they left behind. Her brother lives on the fourth floor and the same thing happened, only they stole the money that was in his wife's purse in the living room. The seventh floor neighbors also had someone climb in their kitchen window.
Nope. But then again, I don't own anything worth stealing. Well...except this computer, lol.

Hehehe. I gotta spare if ya need one. You could go "Hat Hulk" on people.
It does not happen with me also..but i am the perfect candidate for this.because...without alcohol i cant sleep and after alcohol i cant resist..women or theif..everyone is welcome
Burgalized? No. Burglarized? Also no
Did have a Chinese friend who's laptop and some cash were stolen from his apartment though, without any signs of forced entry. Strangely, it happened soon after he took on a new roommate...hmmmm
I live in Suzhou and Yes, my home was burglarized on Aug 28th while I was sleeping. It occurred between midnight and 6 am.
I haven't. But I've heard something happening lately about people being burgled after some kind of spray was used on them. Has anyone heard of anything similar? I recall a while back there were some crimes reported about people being sprayed on the Shanghai metro, then becoming all kind of malleable, and then they just get marched to an ATM and do what they're told (take out all the money in this case). Anyone familiar with any of this? I assume it's something like an aerosol version of a date-rape drug. Nasty.

My last year in the Justice Department, we were warned about a kind of "contact poison" used for human trafficking.
The way it works is that the victim takes a card, or a mobile phone or something that has been sprayed or "painted" with a toxin that is absorbed by the skin.
They touch the coated object and the toxin is absorbed into the system by the skin.
The use of this substance has declined in the last few years, because too man people were dying. Getting the righ dose is hard, as age, weight, etc. vary the effectiveness of the toxin. A dosage that is enough to incapacitate one person, might be enough to kill a second and have very little effect on the third.
And girls are NOT the only target when it comes to human trafficking. Men can be victims too.

Oh that's ok, I'm sure it'd be ruled as suicide anyway.
EDIT: Interesting that you mention human trafficking. I've heard about it being used in that way here too - mothers are asked to take a picture, take hold of a camera, and then wake up and their baby's gone.
6 years +/- . two bikes stolen, that's all. Knock on Wood.
Yes, in Guilin. The night before I was to go home for the winter Holliday, someone cut the bars on my window and stole my money and my mp-4 player.
The police then scolded me for keeping valuables in my home.
The insurance the school had for the place, did not pay as they felt that I had caused the situation by keeping US dollars at home (which I was taking to the US the very next day).
happywanderer:
OMG, they just won't take responsibility for anything will they .
GuilinRaf:
Nope.
Even pointing out that my flight ticket was for 6 am (meaning, I would be in the airport at 4 at the latest did not help much.
However, when I said that I thought this may be an "inside job" their attitude changed. When I got back from the winter holliday, I had a new AC, and new shower heater, both of which I had asked for the year before and was told they could not supply.
STill, not a pleasant moment....
As the only SWF on campus, and because my accommodation was FAR away from all the other foreigners, i was very security conscious. On my first day, i refused to stay in the provided accommodation until all security issues were addressed: bars on windows, heavy steel outer door etc. I have been lucky to date.......
Not happened to me personally, but the chap living in the apartment across from me did.
We live on the 7th (top) floor of our building, their is another floor above, but that's just storage with doors to the roof.
A person or persons unknown used a rope to scoot down and break his window to gain entry.
