Q: Have you ever seen any really old cars in China?

I see old 3 wheeled trucks, they never look safe , no guards around the belts. I've never seen any old cars. I mean older than Camaros, saw one for sale on line.

I don't recall seeing anything older than 1980ies. I do know there are some car clubs for people with old cars, but it is rare. I would guess all the old cars that are in China used to belong to top officials, and their have since been handmedowns to the regular Wang who has then neglected to take care of it, as maintenance is an evil western value. The oldest Chinese car I have seen is a HongQi, the one that is essentially an Audi 100

I occasionally see an old beater every now and then, but nothing I would term as "classic".  From my memory of taking the exam for the chinese driving license, they're pretty strict with their vehicle inspections, and any vehicle not deemed road worthy should be sold to a scrap yard.  Of course this regulation, like many others, is probably only enforced when it is convenient to do so.  Also, the roads and local driving habits take their toll on cars in China....I don't see how a car that's driven regularly could truly survive more than 10-15 years.

I saw a 1955 Ford Thunderbird in a side yard in Tianjin. That's the only one I have seen that's older than a 1984 VW Santana.

The gov must protect their revenue streams, thus it is unlawful to import an auto over 10 years old.

There's a really old classic car that looks like an older generation of the model T sittingin front of a famous restaurant in one of the old alleyways in central Beijing if I remember correctly. I was told that it belonged to an official or actor or something like that from 40-50 years ago. Sorry I don't know anymore specific information.

No, not really! Why do you ask? Are you looking to buy or purchase an old car for yourself?

TedDBayer:

I have a 38 and a 32, because i like them and never seen one in China. There must be some sitting in a chicken coup some where. I'd settle for an old rickshaw so you can pull me around, but you have to wear the big straw hat, but I'll get one extra pointy for you.-dunce cap.
