Q: Henan woman. Meeting her parents to confirm the engagement?

This is a question by proxy.

I have a British mate in GZ, who is heading up to Zhengzhou in Henan to meet his girlfriends parents.

Now this guy is not daft. He is  GM of a western factory, that he set up, and he knows the score with Chinese women. He likes this woman and want's to marry her. They have been together for a few years, and they do make a good couple.

But since he agreed to go to Henan to meet her parents this weekend, he has had all sort of demands placed upon him by his GF, and he needs some clarification on a few things.  I know we could bing it, but first hand experience gives a better answer.

Q1: What is the minimum deposit to get a mortgage from a bank in Henan?

Q2:  What is the average price of a 100 sqm apartment in Zhengzhou. I estimated 250K, but his girlfriend is showing us photos of villas that she says costs 500k. ( Actually, my phone blocks all Henan real estate agents for some reason)

Q3: what is the average Bride Price for a Henan woman.

Q4:  Any scams from uncles etc he should look out for?

As I say. This guy know the score. he is not daft.

But any info he can go armed with will be very much appreciated.

Edited to clarify Henan Provence, not Hunan.

Gentlemen and Daphne, you are missing a golden opportunity for cultural exchange! He should agree to every request then explain it's a British tradition for the BRIDE's parents to buy the groom a house in a location of his choosing in his home county - and of course cultural exchange is a two way street. Chelsea sounds good to me?

As a woman from Henan province, and saw this post by accident while i searching for Spanish course, my thought about this guy would be: he is daft and no doubt about it. I laugh so hard now and have to share it with my friends. Every country has some customs, Henan Province do have this if the family are not very open and not well educated, I'm sorry to put it in this way. However, dude, communication communication and communication, isn't it simple to deal with this?

And to be honest, I doubt the communication between this guy and his 'GF'.  This girl must be such a traditional woman and she learnt nothing from her education.

earthizen:

Wow, the so-called Cultural Revolution (Culture Wipe-out is more like it) of PRC certainly did a thorough job in wiping out traditional chinese values and customs.

This girl and/or her parents are nothing traditional in the traditional chinese sense, my traditional chinese (ie chinese outside of PRC) friends tell me practically all traditional chinese know about "bamboo door to bamboo door, wooden door to wooden door".  If you look at it superficially you may get the idea that it is wealthy folks looking down upon the poor (although it is true that quite a few do) but to be fair, it entails more than that. It includes compatibility in other areas such as personality, life goals, education level.......etc.

The West has a similar saying, birds of a feather flock together. These two sayings are 1). nothing new, 2). common sense, really.

"There is a Chinese Idiom – 门当户对 (men dang hu dui), literally 'the door must match with the door of the opposite party'. In ancient times, the traditional practice is to find someone with the similar family background, in terms of wealth, especially WEALTH, culture, dialect and ethnic groups. So if the door in your house is built with wood, you shall marry someone with the wooden door; if your door is built with bamboo, you shall marry only those with bamboo door. In ancient days, only the rich could afford wooden doors, whereas poor can only afford bamboo. That was where ‘men dang hu dui’ was derived from."
