I will be living 2 months in Beijing and I am suffering with this smog. My lungs feel tight and the clothing smells bad as do some areas of the city. What would be your best advice on coping with this?

If you don't have to live there go to another city, otherwise there is not much you can do, just try to avoid the smelly areas
Just be grateful that it's only Beijing smog. Go spend some time in a city like Chongqing and Beijing will feel like countryside spring air afterwards.
I was in Beijing for a few days and I knew I couldn't live there. The smog is horrible, and even air conditioning will not clear out all the pollution. Your only option is to deal with it or move, sorry.
Wear a mask. People will think you're a big baby but that's better than having continuous bronchitis and breathing problems down the road.
Shenzhen is just as bad. That stench hits you as soon as you get off the plane. Try smoking!! I find it helps!
Changsha is also so polluted, I feel very depressed while I have no spot to see stars,
I was considering buying a telescope, but I will use it only in Brazil,..
There are a number of things you can do to reduce the smog intake.
First you can take some of the suggested advice by wearing a mask. Second you can go to one of the parks where they have a lot of trees and fresh air it beats being near the smog around the busy city.
Third if you feel like your clothes smells and you are breathing to much of the smog then you should try to avoid going out as much as possible. You can stay indoors more than you would outdoors.
Fourth besides the parks you can go to the mountains because they too have an abundance of trees and climbing the mountain can get you to the top of the peak the highest point where clean air exists for you and me.
One thing that helps me in Shanghai, which I assume would work in Beijing, is to get A LOT of plants for your apartment. The bigger and greener the better. They of course produce oxygen and add moisture into the air, which is important with these dryer-than-a-desert AC units here.
Jasmine plants are a nice choice, as they grow pretty easily and are tough to kill. They also smell nice when they flower, which is a bonus if you like the scent. There are tons of cheap plants you can buy that will help fiter the air. Oh, tomatoes are also a good bet - they grow easily and have the added bonus of tomatoes!
This won't help you much outside of your own apartment, but it will help create a "shelter" of sorts from the outside world.
