What do you mean by "get a legal chinese license by exchanging" ?
As far as I know, a legal chinese license requires you to take a test.
If there's no test involved, you should remove the "legal" before "chinese license"

Your wrong you can exchange any licence because china does not regonize international ones this is perfectly legal dont quote facts you dont know
mrpopular:
also a test is not required because our tests are much harder and we are safer drivers

The one who's wrong here is you. You cannot exchange your license, that's all. I know international licenses are not valid here and if you want to drive, you HAVE TO take a test and get your license. If somebody has proposed you to simply exchange your foreign license for a chinese one, it's NOT LEGAL. A lot of people or companies propose this service, and you may never have any problem with it but how can you know your license will not be a fake ? I have my Chinese license and I went through all the formalities to get it. I could have saved time (but not money) simply paying somebody to do it for me, but if I get controled by the police, I'll feel comfortable that it's a genuine one. And saying that the test is not required because our tests are much harder is just plain stupid
I know this is answering a question with a question but.......why the hell would you bother to try to drive here? Death wish?
no problem i have bought a car but you do pay a high luxury tax double
If you got the cash then you got the deal. It doesn't matter about paper work they just want that cash. Well of course if it is clean money otherwise they wouldn't be able to help you out. Shouldn't be a problem I know many foreigners that bought cars in China and are driving around the town.
Possible, but need cash or a foreign bank loan, Chinese banks will NOT give a loan to a foreigner, if you're married or in a stable relationship you could have your partner do the loan in their name, but then the registration of the car would also be in their name so you need that trust.
As for getting a license, yes you will need to take a test, just the written test and it is available in many languages including English. If you don't take the test it is illegal despite what any agencies may have promised.
it's not hard.....but it is quiet inconvenient because in china you pay for a lot of things besides the car...........annual maintainence check-ups...road fees.....gas and so on........iit's not only the car you paying for so if you buy 100000 Rmb car you need around 20000 to 30000 Rmb for other costs and fees and so on.....don't think of the car itself.........think about the package it comes with...Good Luck
Buying the car is not the hard part. Getting them to remove the protective plastic covering from everywhere is the hard part.
Its not such a big deal... you dont even need a license to buy a car. They dont even ask.. All the extra fees, just forget about them.. Just worry about the total.. Most prices you see are a total listed price, taxes already included. So just negotiate from there.
REMEMBER buy a car from the same city as your Residence Permit, or whatever paper you have to show your registered. You just need a passport and that police paper. But if you buy in a neighboring city itll be ALOT more hassle and paper work. Most will just get lazy and say you cant... But of course they wont say anything untill after youve payed.
It takes 15 minutes or so. Then they will arrange the paper work to be picked up later that day or the following one.
Then you must go to have the car checked, some wierd police station... Thats a hellhole. Soooo many people and sooo many lines that go nowhere for them to inspect your car for 5 seconds... If i may reccomend.. A huge 2nd hand car market will have a small police inpection place inside , much less people save you hours and stress.
If you cant find you can also pay a dude to do it all for you. When you go to the inpection place youll see them yelling at cars. Around 5-800 should be enough.
Theyll make sure the car isnt stolen, take a photo andgive you a paper licence plate and a little blue book. After that just drive away! But go back a few weeks later for your real plates.
