Q: How many consecutive years can a foreigner work in each province?

I have had a Foreign Expert Certificate for seven consecutive years. I have been told that I can't work in Sichuan next school year because the limit is five years there. Does anyone know which provinces I can work in or how I can find out? I am especially interested in Chongqing and Shanghai.

Thanks for the help

Edit: So far it seems Guangdong at least doesn't have this kind of regulation. For those who think it isn't a real thing elsewhere, let me assure you that it is in Sichuan. I have spent close to a month trying to figure out a way to stay here. No luck.

Also, to clarify something, this rule was brought up after three years in Shenzhen and then two near Chengdu. I had to leave after the fifth year (spent a year in America). As for why I now have seven year record and am leaving again... let's just leave it at incompetence in my school's international department.

Interesting topic!

I've never worked at the same School/Province longer than 2 years.

You could dial SAFEA in each Province/city and ask them about it.

Enter 'safea' in search above for Provincial Gov. HQ address and contact no. around China.

Update the Board with answer you'll get, please.

Indefinitely, the 5 years rule is false. I have been in Guangdong for 8 years.

It wouldn't surprise me if you just moved province, you'd get a reset. If not, that would actually mean that one department in one province would actually communicate with another province... and that would mean effort.... (although, as I write this, I recall a mate of mine who did something sort of like this - although he was actually on a student visa some of the time - and he had hassles when he moved inter-province!)

the five year rule is for english speaking experts, engineers, consultants, bankers dont have the 5 year rule,

some provinces are enforcing the rules, the smaller your town, the colder your climate, the harder the recruiting, the less they enforce the rule.

i did have a friend who got a new fec  book when he changed provinces and when he came back, they gave him a new 5 year book to start all over again, this was working in jinan, then dalian, then back to jinan.

i have a filipino teacher hit 5 years in shandong and went to hubei for 2 years and came back to a new 5 year book in shandong.

the provinces dont interact very well, some of them are still using paper files and windows xp daily for business needs and want spend the money for a scanner.

its no real surprise really, if you move provinces, you have to close a bank of china account and move your money to a new branch in the new province to avoid paying fees everytime you take money out. this is suppose to be a powerful premier global bank, yeah right.

I am hitting my 5th year too. My boss tells me not to worry, but we will have to cancel all my documents and start it again. Also I found out the rule is to ensure foreigners don't forget their native languages
