I visited China from 2 to 4 times per year. from 3 to 6 weeks each time, since 1997 until 2009 that I moved here.  And I am still very happy with my decision to be here.

First visited in 2002 for 7 months, then moved back for good in 2005. No regrets, life in England had grown dull, here it's not just a fresh start, with learning a new language it's like being a child again. Very challenging but always interesting.

I'd like to but I have a house that is paid for and a dog and 6 cats living in it. I lost a cat when I was in China, came home and my house was ruined.

I'm half way there! 2.5years, married to a Chinese and very happy here. In China you can achieve anything you want, much easier than back home (UK)...

I've done 6 years. I'm done.

Next time, Thailand, in the hopes that I won't get there right at the end of the transition from "nice" to "dicks", and no more learning the local language and being eager to understand the wonderful mystical things from the east they have to say. I'm not making that mistake again.

mArtiAn:

Lol, yeh, I remember when I first arrived here I was all about soaking up the culture and 'message' of the 'mystic east'. Walking home pissed one night some old fella on a wall beckoned me over and I thought, sure, immerse yourself, experience China, feel the native culture of this ancient land flow through you.

As it turned out the only thing I felt when I sat down was this pervy old fucker's hand on my leg, so I got up and left with a wairy eye over my shoulder.

So much for the mystic east. Swings and roundabouts though, innit?

funny to see the comments here,it really depends on where you are,who you are with and your reasons I suppose, lots of foreigners I met couldn't really hack it back home so here they feel its better, some are differeent. But I must admit I find the ignorance, bad manners, anger and general bad attitude to be a challenge.Im ex-military,world traveled and this is by far the saddest MF I have lived in.the people make the place and lets face it all,Chinese are bad mannered, they shout and spit everywhere, piss on the path, swear blind lies to you, treat you like a fool and the best ever, believe cctv news. Like it or love it this is my opinion,Carpe Diem.

14 years.

I actually wasn't going to chime in here until I saw deano's post.

Yes, a lot of foreigners couldn't hack it back home, a lot of them also cannot hack it here, either. Being here gives them an excuse for being socially awkward.

Ignorance and bad manners, well, a lot of your common folk have not had access to higher education as the education system went from free but piss-poor to expensive and mediocre. Bad manners? They're not considered bad manners here just 'they way of things'.

I'm ex-military, too. It's the resourcefulness and ability to adapt to different situations while remaining objective (army training) that keeps me at peace here (no spitting on others and slapping them around).

Do the Chinese really believe everything that they see on CCTV news? I don't think so. Most Chinese people that I've met don't even care what goes on in the world (why should they? They have to worry about themselves, their family and how to make it in their world).

I'm not dissing deano's opinion, but there is a whole world of difference between criticizing (China-basher), blindly accepting absolutely everything (pollyanna) and understanding (long-termer who can adjust to life here, there, or anywhere).

BTW: My 14 years has consisted of six years of great, gone-in-a-flash times, six years of 'this is real life' ups and downs and two hellish years. Would my life been different if I stayed in my home country? That's for the philosophers to ponder. If you're real, life is real.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
