Q: How many official days holiday are there in your home country when compared to China?

According to official sources, the following days are holidays:

Spring Festival January 31- February 6 (seven days in total)

Tomb Sweeping Day April 5-7 (three days in total)

Labor Day May 1-3 (three days in total)

Dragon Boat Festival May 31-June 2 (three days in total)

Mid-Autumn Festival September 6-8 (three days in total)

National Holiday October 1-7 (seven days in total)

a total of 26 days holiday

in my home country there are 9 official public holidays

How does your home country compare: more or fewer public holidays?

We have only 11 days back home, so it's a lot more here. Hey, I'm not complaining. smiley

26 days sounds a lot Sorrel until you consider that a lot of them include weekends. China actually has something like 11 public holidays if you count Saturday and Sunday as non-working days.

In the UK there are 8 public holidays, though the Isle of Man, where I lived for many years has 10.

BUT...the big difference to China is the annual holiday entitlement which is generally 4 weeks in the UK whereas China is one week (two after 5 years of service). Chinese annual holiday entitlement is in the bottom half of the worldwide league tables.

sorrel:

true, in addition there are the 'official working days' people have to make up for the official work days off:

January 26 (Sunday) and February 8 (Saturday) are official working days

May 4 (Sunday) is an official working day

September 28 (Sunday) and October 11 (Saturday) are official working days

so there are actually only 21 official holidays

Here is the real deal about china:

Spring Festival January 31- February 6 (seven days in total)     -      officially you only have 3 days, working one day before and one day after spring festival at your weekend, makes it seven days including the weekend

Tomb Sweeping Day April 5-7 (three days in total)        -     1 official day, other 2 days are weekend or have to be worked at a weekend

Labor Day May 1-3 (three days in total)       -   1 official day, other 2 days are weekend or have to be worked at a weekend

Dragon Boat Festival May 31-June 2 (three days in total)   -     1 official day, other 2 days are weekend or have to be worked at a weekend

Mid-Autumn Festival September 6-8 (three days in total)     -  1 official day, other 2 days are weekend or have to be worked at a weekend

National Holiday October 1-7 (seven days in total)     -   officially you only have 3 days, working one day before and one day after national week at your weekend, makes it seven days including the weekend

as you see everything is fake in china, even the holiday is no holiday.

Grand total: 10 public holidays, add my 15 days annual leave (standard) makes 25.

compared to my home: 30 days annual leave and 9 public holidays

china has 1 public holiday more but in total i still lose 14 days annual leave

sorrel:

it is interesting even the official sites about holidays here differ

Hotwater:

The official sites here claim different things to hide the fact that Chinese employees have very low total holiday entitlement compared to a lot of other countries.

I read an article once (maybe China Daily) where changing Chinese holidays were discussed, particularly focussing on the mad rush & masses of people who travelled on public holidays here. There was one suggestion to give Chinese workers more holidays & make them flexible to being them in line with a lot of other countries. The response from the government mouthpiece was that "Chinese workers get lots of holidays, they are entitled to 115 days a year!"  Of course he was including weekends in that figure........

We only have 11, but you have to couple that with the fact that people have 5-7weeks of paid vacation at their disposal.

My home country has 12 national days off and, or course in any normal country, we don't have to make up for them by working weekends and 6-day work weeks. This passed week we (well I didn't because I'm here but those back home) had Monday off for our Freedom Day and then Thursday off for Labour Day so schools got the entire week off.. Awesome.
