Q: How to move around during Spring Festival?

I took a train once during national holiday and... Never Again!! Is flying the only way? Are there quieter days on which taking the train is OK? Or am I just stuck in Beijing until it's over?

Dude stay in Beijing. Flights will be so expensive that you would refuse to pay even if you could afford it.  If you really needed to go, then try just  for a few days in the middle when everyone is already at home but not coming back yet.

I will only be moving from my bed to my sofa to the phone to order food and water..  This is the devil time. Best hide your kids

brother1818:

I did that last year, I was in Hangzhou and just ordered food and did absolutely nothing. Quite enjoyed it. Might have to resort to that again. I quite like the big cities during that time because everything is so quiet

I use those big a** tour Buses but long trip and no bathroom stops make it hell on the bladder..

Yeah there's only a few ways, Fly, Bus or rent a Nice car and drive the hell out of from Beijing to anywhere  if you have a Chinese Drivers ID. Possibly can rent a driver and have him take you to where you want for a 1000 or more.

Yeah I hate Holidays near HK Borders, Train line up's with thousands of people....

Hiring a driver will be more than a 1000 during CNY...

Depends on the Driver, a lot of different rates and different drivers... you can score a deal..

Big a** tour busses during Spring Festival are often piloted by inexperienced drivers as the Big a** tour bus companies make sure to get every single vehicle on the streets.

I almost always get out of China over spring festival...booking a flight somewhere early. This year I'm off to Vietnam. Return flight from Guangzhou to Ho Chi Ming for 1500rmg return!

Though one year I stayed in Guangzhou and had a really relaxing time as all the migrants had gone home!

i m taking train, like every year.

D and G train is fine as everyone has their seats and no people standing around. But where I m going to i have to take the last 2 hours the countryside train which is super ass.

people buying "no seat tickets" and all take 20 pieces of lugguage and food and you cant even get to your seat. It sucks balls.  chinese always take so much lugguage

I always work during Spring Festival and then take the days at a later time. The commute to work is heavenly as the population drops from about 8 million to about 500,000 during this time. The downside is most restaurants are closed.

Last year, I could walk down in the middle of the road.

It seems I was the only person who stayed in Wujiang

that is apart from the workers in Walmart and the guy who

set off the fireworks every night exactly at 22:00

It was a great time

I'm pretty sure the pollution dropped dramatically

mike695ca:

Ill second that. The peace of these huge empty cities is really nice. You take the subway and just lay down on the rows and rows of empty benches.

My first couple I stayed in Dongguan and just chilled out at home with my friends, last year I drove to my wifes hometown in Hubei, it was about three days before the holiday and the road was super quiet, the whole 1200km I was stuck in traffic for about 45min total, mostly in Hunan when I was behind some big trucks going up a mountain.

Go a few days before and you should be fine, just do a destination/resort holiday not a traveling holiday.

brother1818:

Ya, I mean going a few days early would be great but I have to work until the day before and start the day after. So probably just gonna stay in BJ and take it easy. Maybe take a trip in March or April if I must.

That's the best way, do any traveling with your annual leave or just take a couple of weeks off between CNY and Mid-Autumn, otherwise it's just impossible to go anywhere!
