I think she means ‘Fenghuang' township, not fei huang.

Also, Huaihua is a lovely old water town with ancient buildings (and people!)

If you have time, you should go there too. Hunan is one of my favourite provinces in China.

Yes, Fenghuang and ZhangJiaJie are both the best places in Hunan for cultural. I haven't personally been to HuaiHua but if Crimson reccommends it then I would garner taking a look. Changsha has a terrific night-life and food scene in addition to ShaoShan - MaoZeDong's true hometown which has recently become its own township (liberated from Xiangtan).

Yueyang is a nice city to visit as well, and from there you can visit zhang gu ying. (old village)

Zhangjiajie is a must..
