But I swear i did not know what is was until after we left the Guanzhou restaurant. I was the guest of a Chinese family who took me and my partner out for dinner and they ordered so much food. I did not know what half of it was. Don't be angry with me but the dog meat was pretty tasty. Last year in Mongolia I ate some horsemeat stew and that was also good. But in Mongolia they only kill the injured or older horses that cannot work any longer. I don't know where the dogs in Guanzhou came from.
Dogs on the menu in China are mostly big dogs, because small dog has too many bones. Similar as middle size fish (10 -15cm length).
I ate dog in Jixian, Hebei. It tastes similar to beef, but kind of gamey and chewyer. They told me, it's a dog after I repeat my Q three times.
At explanation, why we don't eat dog, I compare pet dog with wife/GF or parents. They always 'bark' something at you, for difference of pet dog, who's always happy and friendly, when it sees you. Can't eat my friend!
I didn't know until after, either. It was delicious... in it's own way... but the meat was a bit disgusting, too. That was just because of the seasoning, which I didn't like.
Don't worry, nothing's wrong with eating dogs. Make sure you film it and send it to PETA. They just might give you a bullet to the head...
icnif77:
They eat dogs here! Shouldn't you send 'chopsticks' to PETA, too? Or better to BeBuBu…..Be…Bu….Bu…..O2,o2
The dogs in GZ are streetdogs, people pets that have strayed or come from dog farms where they have been raised for food purposes.
Relax...contrary to expat rumors, you will not rot in hell for eating dog. Just stay away from my Schnauzer!
I had a friend who turned vegetarian az a kid after having a chicken as a pet. I can understand why people would not want to eat dog meat. However, I cannot understand people who would proscribe such for others (given no abuse of said dogs) because dogs are pets. Eat away my friend.
Also I have had horse and donkey meat dishes in Shandong and that was some of the best food I have had in my life.
I will eat it but not my favorite meal by any means . and yes I eat Kangaroo and emu, camel and the odd witchery grub so sue me
icnif77:
You ate kangaroo? Can't believe it!
I had kangaroo puppy (with small pocket in front), when I was younger
philbravery:
a baby Kangaroo is a Joey not a puppy . sheee Don't they teach you anything in Chinese schools these days
icnif77:
I always hid candy in kang's pocket! Was that humane? Only after I came out of the puberty, I realize pocket is not for candies. O2 O2
I teach in Chinese schools. Nobody speaks English at my school, butT I'll rage tomorrow about 'Joey'
I am indifferent to if you eat it or not, but what I don’t like is often being pressured into trying it. I get tired of the same old story, oh, don’t worry they are raised for food, not as pets. Who cares??? I don’t want it so stop asking me to eat it!!! Every time I hear a dog yelp, I can only think it is some idiot hitting one over the head with a stick so they can eat it.
I actually had to tell my wife that saying you raised them to eat is a shit reason. She didn’t understand until I said we raised beef in America to eat, but that doesn’t mean we insist that people from India eat it. She finally conceded that maybe her friends were being a bit insensitive to others cultures.
Chinese like to impress people with their willingness to eat “exotic” food, but actually if you take them out of China they usually don’t try anything they aren’t already used to eating.
I am also guessing that a country as poor as China could surely find a more efficient way to produce and consume protein.
I ate it once and it weirded me out, I think there was still fur on the skin of the meat. Also, we asked the waitress what kind of a dog and she just said xiao gou (small dog).. Tasted a bit like off lamb...
the belief is that you'll now be more resistant to catching a cold. if i didn't think it was a superstitious old wives tale, i might even try it myself. but i lost 2 cats to neighbours already. eating dogmeat would leave a disturbing thought in my mind about someone missing their beloved pet.
He ate gruba! Do you chew it or you just swallow? 'witchery'? What's that?
It must be witch's pet. First, its on the floor, and afterwards they fly together toto the broom nebula.

The witchetty grub (also spelled witchety grub or witjuti grub) is a term used in Australia for the large, white, wood-eating larvae of several moths.
You better check your spelling!like 'witjuty grub' as (we) Adelaideans say. I'm going to bed, 'cause in the morning gold spot will be up at least 4%. Russian gold, that is!
I would never. I'm not a big fan of meat anyway, the exception being pork. So I always ask beforehand.
I also ate dog meat in Korea at a buffet not knowing what it was and I have to admit it was very tasty. Dogs bred for meat poses no ethical problem for me since they are not an endangered species, and in my mind is no less cruel or inhumane that eating cows, horses, pigs, chickens, or ?????
