What are the rules about this? Is it like the States? Do you get fined? Imprisoned?

I would not want to try this but I feel a heavy beating by a mob including police and PLA a good stint in jail, a fine, public apology followed by deportation and no return to China again.
There is a famous politician from HK did this and he will be put in prison for few years. don't know exactly how many years.
It is a no-no here. In China, any "insult" to the national flag is a criminal offense. Article 299 of the Criminal Code specifies that
whoever purposely insults the national flag, or national emblem of the PRC in a public place with such methods as burning, destroying, scribbling, soiling, and trampling is to be to be sentenced to not more than three years of fixed-term imprisonment, criminal detention, control or deprived of political rights.
That penalty was introduced into the Hong Kong SAR under the 1997 National Flag and National Emblem Ordinance, upheld by the Hong Kong Court of Appeal in 1999 as "necessary for national cohesion" after claims that it was contrary to Article 39 of the Basic Law by restricting rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong residents under the International Covenant on Civil & Political Rights (ICCPR). The Court commented that restrictions on freedom of speech contained in the Ordinance were limited and justified by the need to protect other values that were also worthy of constitutional protection.
Recently in Tibet there was an incident of flag burning. Those involved were fined 4,000 Rmb each.
I agree Hppy say: no-no here. no sure of states. China has law that forbid this kind action.
try it for once and we will learn a lesson from what will happen to you

I wouldn't be recommending that............Chinese will blow a fuse for their precious "Beautiful" Flag..................ALL RED AND FIVE STARS........................On a second thought this flag might be good for a five star hotel though..............LOL
I don't know, but it's illegal to throw one over someone's head and kick 'em in the bollocks. Last time they let me back in 'that' hotel.
is it illegal to burn your country flag? your answer may answer your question
Scandinavian:
It is legal to burn my country's flag. In fact it is on the list of recommended ways of discarding old flags. What else would you do with an old torn flag, throw it to the landfill alongside used diapers?
