Q: Just been told, persons born in India will not be given work visas by the Chinese govt.!! true??
I was born in India but have German nationality and a German passport. However, I am informed that a "person of Indian origin even if he has a European passport" is NOT eligible for a Chinese work visa!! Anybody heard of such a regulation or practice?

I know so many friends from Pakistan and India who have their work visa. As long as you have the required papers for the visa,you will get it..
Public workers at the embassy or visa office (in Hong Kong and Macau) are only here to process your visa, they do not have the right to refuse it unless your application is incomplete, the provided documents are falsified or you have a criminal background, your application can however be refused for any reason without the need to justify his choice by the immigration officer in charge of delivering the alien employment license to your prospective employer, before you actually go to the Chinese embassy in your country or to the visa office in HK/Macau.
I have never heard of anyone being refused a working visa as long as their application was complete.

It sounds like the company did not want to employ you based on the colour of your skin. They just lied to you about the visa. Sadly racism is very common here.
Yeah that doesnt make much sense. China is racist and commonly do this with a complete lack of logic, refusing a german passport holder a visa because it looks like he may have been born in India would be opening up a huge can of worms. Doubt it.

Having worked in HR whilst in China I can tell you it happens all the time. I personally saw people do it at least 10 times in a period of 2 months.

M'lord, forgive me but i think your missing the point. OP wasnt refering to companies, although that is probably the real issue, he was refering to some new government policy where he would be refused a visa because of his birthplace, regardless of his passport. So i was refering to that as well.

What type of work are you trying to get a visa to do?
If it is English teaching then yes, I have heard of this, it's common. To get a proper working visa you need to be a native speaker from one of about five countries.
A German passport wouldn't qualify you.

I'm not saying the law is strictly adhered to, just that if they say they can't get him a visa there is a good chance it's the truth.

Also, if you are Chinese you wouldn't know because you've never dealt with visa issues in China.
