Q: Leaving on the day the visa expires

Hi everyone, I have a question about my visa as I am leaving the country permanently within the coming months. My visa expires on the 31st am I able to fly out of the country (returning home for good) on the last day of the visa date or is it best to leave before the expiration date. Any information would be appreciated thanks.

If you are leaving with no return in future then its OK even if you get fined for delays however it is advised to avoid this by leaving a day earlier. You never know if the flights get delayed thus avoiding something you can, will be a wise move. Overstay won't cost you a kidney but a red stamp of overstay or put you on the overstayed list. Perhaps there is a fine per day of overstay, I am not sure how much is that?

International flights are less likely to be delayed than internal flights in China - think 'face' and the fact that if the international flight was delayed for anything other than a technical reason this have international consequences, however minor.

on my first RP, i departed on the last day of my visa - no problems.

This was due to the fact that local PSB office gave me a ridiculously narrow timeframe between the end of term and expiration of visa: literally my visa expired the day after my last scheduled work day.

I had noted this and told my employer, who told me not to be concerned (surprise, surprise), so i advised them that there would be no delays in my departure the day after seeing as they insisted i stay to the bitter end.

I made sure that  my flight was due to depart in the afternoon, so should there be any delay in the flight, my passport had the stamp in it so any over-stay was not my doing or fault.

After that i made sure there were always a few days between departure and expiration - i did not want to tempt fate.

Just make sure you have a day or two to spare on the visa.

Thank you all for the information so far it is always good to know. My employment contract ends on the same date as my Z visa which is why I am concerend but I will talk to my boss and see if I can try leaving a day or two before the expiration date.
It seems like a bit of a nightmare, my job, apartment and visa are all up on the same date and I am beginning to panic trying to tie up loose ends, anyway fingers crossed it works out.

thefidu881:

First, you better inform your house owner that you will leave on certain date and you would like to clear all business with him/her with respect to deposits and bills etc. Don't leave it for the last day since they can screw you by saying the paint in the kitchen has shades and you should pay for it. Deal with the house issues at least three days prior to your departure and let the owner know you would leave on the specific day and will hand over keys to him. Believe me this can get shitty and cost your time on the last day. Ask your employer for a leave if you have. I mean if you are going for the last day, make sure all other matters are dealt with such as letters from employer, clearance from house owner etc before the last day.

sorrel:

When communicating with your employer on this, also communicate by email.

Outline the issue as clearly and unambiguously as you can - use simple English - so there can be no 'misunderstanding'.

By keeping things non-confrontational and civil, you should be ok.

If they dither about giving you a response or are unhelpful, imply that you will hold them responsible should you 'overstay' your visa as you have attempted to ensure you are visa compliant and they did not assist you. Again, back ALL communication up by email.

Maybe even throw the word 'embassy' in (but use this as a last resort.)

I've done this twice and never had a problem.  However I have a friend who planned to fly to Shenzhen and cross to HK his last day.  His domestic flight was delayed and he overstayed and got charged.  He tried to explain that he had tried his best to get out the country and it was due to events out of his control, even showing them his flight tickets etc.. But this didn't cut it.  Since he had these problems I've haven't risked it again.

You are always (legally) allowed to go to the PSB and request an extension for 30 days.

This may not help you, but I think it might be a smart thing to do since everything ends on the same day. In this case, with 30 days up your sleeve, you could leave your apartment, and make sure you get your deposit back, have everything taken care of, without being hassled (and put into situations you're rather not be in if you were forced to rush things). Eg, if your landlord doesn't want to give the deposit back, you're pretty screwed cos youi'll be gone. But with 30 days, you have the time to get it back.

(obviously, you'd need a place to stay, but that shouldn't be too much of an issue...)
