Chinese to English or English to Chinese?

Have you tried posting/looking in the jobs section of this site, or on the beijinger, cityweekend and other expat sites?

You will have better results too if you request a translation sample, and maybe request that they have a degree in English or Chinese, or have previous work experience in the field.

If it is Ch-En, and it is written translation, then definitely look for someone who is a native English speaker.

But you say that you are looking for a translator for both oral and written, does this mean that you need an interpreter too? If that is the case, although you can find some expats who are fluent enough to serve as an interpreter, you would still probably be better off using a Chinese person who speaks english. They are less expensive, and generally know more about the Chinese culture/business culture.

Like I said before, using expat websites is a good first step, as that is where expats, (some of who can translate) look for work, and if the site is in english and a Chinese person finds the listing, that is a good first sign that they would make a good interpreter.

You can't imagine how painful it is for me to assist you. Tongue

Find a Chinese gf who has a recent college degree, any major. Her Chinese will be excellent and her English good enough. Seriously, she will both translate and interpret for you in her most honest manner.

dont use a native engl speaker. go to colleges and universities get a team of english major seniors or 3rd year students they will work for next to nothing and be enthused. plus if you choose wisely there could be added benefits.
i say get a team because one should be free at anytime

crimochina:

you can set up a test for them. that is what i plan to do when i go to the singles mixer here. all i have to do is walk in front of a college and start talking to anyone. i love it here
