I am not in the position to need a visa until next year but I am planning a trip towards the end of the year back home and want to have a good heads up.
My question is: Does the new visa regulations extend to family/marriage resident permits? Will I need to take any paperwork from the UK or visit the Chinese Embassy there?
Thanks.

As far as I know, the new visa regulations apply to new visas issued after June 1, or September 1, 2013, whichever the case. If anything were to apply to residence permits, it will clearly indicate so. And also, existing residence permits will be honor until expiration date, and only when renewed, any new regulation will apply to them if any exist.
So, if you have a current resdence permit with multiple entries, and you travel abroad, your passport and the permit will be all you need, no need to visit the Chinese Embassy in the UK at all, unless you want to say hello to them.

Sweet, that's what I was hoping for. Being married here certainly has it's benefits although one of them clearly isn't being able to work legally! ;-)
