Q: rental deposit refund
i left my school contract prematurely one month they provided the accomdation but they took 2000 housing deposit but they only want give me 1000 yuan back because they already paid 6 months upfront for the rent and the landlord will not give the deposit back. any way of getting the total 2000 yuan back any suggestions.

Was there any reasoning for only giving you back half, did you break anything ?
If you're working without Residence permit, School can do anything they want. SAFEA would most likely help you (if you didn't cause any damage) to get deposit back.
Shouldn't be any reason for them to do that. If you are not paying rent then should get all back unless something is broken.
They could be keeping half in case you have run up some crazy high bills, in which case you need to confirm with them if that's the case.
Also, check your contract for any little clauses that may be the reason. If all looks ok then push them to get it all back,

Every contract I have seen, or heard of, where accommodation is provided there is a clause, or should be, that says you pay for damages. I have never seen one that says you pay the damage(security) deposit. You might have to give up the 1,000. Sorry; no constructive suggestions other than the suggestion given by icnif77. On the other hand you could threaten to take them to court but I think they will call your bluff.
