Q: Is there such thing as Chinese cheese?

I love cheese. I come from the states and I can get cheese there inexpensively, however,here in Guangzhou it's so expensive because it's imported. So I want to know if maybe there is a Chinese-made cheese that is not so pricy.

20 years ago, in San Francisco Chinatown, tofu was introduced to me as 'tofu cheese'. I bought a small slab of tofu, and ate small piece of it. Tofu tastes no different than soap, without preparation. 

 

I have not heard or seen Chinese caw, sheep or goat milk cheese.

 

Maybe, you should ask Chinese milk producers about it.

yes..before taking any photo Chinese people say "Cheese" in front of Camera..so you will found everywhere Chinese Cheese..

Actually the major dairy producers in Shandong produce some remarkably good European-type cheeses -- not the plastic wrapped cellophane crap but really good European-like cheddars (white and yellow), an imitation Gouda that I quite like, and even a local kind of Mozzarella (the Italians thumb it down but I like it).  The problem is that it is irregularly stocked in all of the major supermarkets and when it is stocked, it doesn't last very long.

 

I will stop in at R*T Mart over the weekend to see if I can give you the brand name.

 

In any case, you are in Guangzhou -- try Metro -- it carries an entire line of cheese, and the Park-n-Shop on Tian He Bei Lu also carries cheese (second floor).

 

Otherwise, there is that wonderful gourmet shop in the basement of the tallest building in Guangzhou (forget the name now).

Yes there are some interesting variations in the grasslands around Mongolia including goat's milk. The flavour tends to be very strong and usually not acceptable to the western taste.

 

My colleague, who is a dairy technologist from France and very knowledgeable about traditional cheeses, met a Chinese guy networking in Beijing. Apparently, this guy has studied cheese technology in Europe and established a small company making various traditional flavours. My colleague told me the quality generally wasn't too bad but he needed to work a little on the acidity and technical aspects of production. It will be interesting to see how this guy develops his business.

The Gouda I bought from TaoBao is great (from Beijing).

Much cheaper than Metro too, bought 2 kg for about 120 kuai,

can't beat that indecision

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
