I think this small language flaw is too little to justify your keyboard usage. Answer the lady and in a polite manner correct the language if you think it needs to improve.

Congratulations Victoria. You are today's winner. You also get a lifetime achievement award, for continued contribution to idiocy.
I think it depends on the context. Traditionally Western vs. Eastern could be defined based on the outcome of WWII. The winning side being the west, and the other winning side being the east. The Iron curtain drew the line between east and west, and this all just was about the developed world, meaning northern hemisphere.
Today the image is a bit more distorted. In terms of structure and development, I'd put Australia in with the Western Countries, but in terms of geography that grouping doesn't work.
I usually think of Europe + Northern America when thinking "western countries", but today I think it is more relevant to group into 1st, 2nd and 3rd world countries, ranking on development level rather than geography.
In cultural terms I would say that most European countries (not including Russia), as well as those countries that have been influenced by European countries could be called western. These would include pretty much all European and American countries as well as Australia and New Zealand. Not sure if I would include any of the former colonies however.
That is basically the definition that I use when teaching my classes. Personally I would probably mainly think of northern American and European countries as western.
ScotsAlan:
Some of Turkey is in Europe. Cross The Bosphorus and you are in Asia.
I support Turkey getting EU membership.
SwedKiwi1:
South Africa? Maybe - Turkey might also qualify although their culture is traditionally western Asian (asia minor, etc.) so it would depend on the criteria.
Western to me means Europe And North America.
I tend to think in geographical terms.
Developed Nations are scattered all over.
