Q: What part of China is the most unspoilt?

I am sure it would be somewhere in the west of the country. What part of China have you visited that has had little or no development or evidence of any human inhabitation? There are many places that are described as 'scenic areas' but are visited by tourists. What part of China do you think is the most unspoilt?    EDIT: i missed the post below as i had not joined the site at that point, but part of my original question was about What part of China have you visited that has had little or no development or evidence of any human inhabitation?

So much beautiful China to EXPLORE

Heixiazi Island -  largely uninhabited territory is expected to become a hotspot for tourism and economic development.

UPDATE: 2013-08-11  China-Russia Border River has submerged 90 percent of China's part of an island shared by the two countries

Aksai Chin - territory of Kashmir, at the junction of Pakistan, Tibet and India and China.

Diaoyutai Islands and Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea

The Paracel Islands in the South China Sea

Spratly Islands in the South China Sea

boqievents:

Diao yu isn't Chinese?!

If It said unspoilt places formally owned by a Japanese citizen and bought by the Japanese government, great answer.

The top of mountains, although I have read about people running into poisonous snakes near Yankshou. How remote do you want to go, if snakes are involved, count me out.

A river cruise on a raft like the Li River is cool, don't take the big boats. And do it in the morning, not so hot, but maybe you will see mist.

All parts I've visited had very much evidence of human development. The all-encompassing grey haze of pollution extends pretty much everywhere... sigh. There are clear days here and there, but... maybe I was visiting them during badly-polluted times.

Hong Kong - It's still managed to maintain the British characteristics even after the Chinese have got their grubby little hands on it.

Uninhabited places can be found in any city if you go further out from the outskirts. There will probably be more of these kind of places in Yunnan.

Li jiang is really nice.  It's full of con artists trying to sell you fake leopard skins though.  And the "yak" being sold in the restaurants is pretty much always beef.  But whatever - beautiful place.

Some places in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan province are pretty much untouched. The best places are further down near the Burmese border. Lot's of ethnic Dai people there. You can even spot wild elephants if you are lucky Smile

sorrel:

That sounds amazing. There have been so many interesting suggestions and ideas posted. Thanks all !

Tianjin when I visited that place looked like what you have just described in your Thread TS.

Hulk:

I'm downvoting you because I've been to Tianjin many times. It's nothing but a huge metropolis with an all-encompassing grey haze.

The grey haze is a lot better now all the Olympic construction is well and truly past.  But yeah, still not a contender for unspoilt beauty.  Not even close.

As I know, Mount Everest has no inhabitants. And it's the highest place in the world. But climbing it is extremely dangerous for common tourists.

Traveler:

China's claim on part of Mount Everest only comes about because of it's illegal invasion of the rightful owner some decades ago.

Nepal owns the most accessed part of Mount Everest.

I would go to Tianshan in Xinjiang Province. It is one of the most unspoilt nature reserves in the world, even recognised by UNESCO.
