Q: What will you do if you are under such a condition?

Well,i will hand in my resignation at the end of this month and leave the company in late June.As i have an important test in October,i planned to give myself four months preparing for the test while resting and cheering myself up (I have lost most of the passion i had two years ago when i came to work in this company). But i also worry it would waste a lot of time,as i could work during the time and study on the side. However,i am not sure whether i would have enough time and energy to prepare for the test if so.And i have to pass the test in this year because i have to use it when i change my job again in the next year. So,i am here to listen to your opinions,i will consider them and make a final decision. Thanks in advance!Have a nice weekend!

PS:My job is accounting,my next job would be in the same career.

Do you have the self-discipline to devote all of the gap time to studying exclusively for this test? If no, then you should work and study (having only the after work hours available would force you to study). It's good that you want to upgrade your skills but perhaps if you have already lost your passion that you should also consider a change in the field (same career but in a different area). Good luck either way.

Just dont get off track

If you say you will study

do not get distracted

are you going home to study or are you staying in your own unit?

Maybe better to hide at your parents home and keep a low profile till you have finished

good luck with your future

chenhan:

Thank you,Phil! I live alone in the house i rent.Keeping a low profile is my motto.

Only you know if you can work and study enough for the test. Like others said, the test must be number one. All the video games, movies, and other stuff will still be there after you PASS the test. You can waste time with those after the test. Exercise is still important, whatever exercise you prefer.

Set goals for study and give yourself a reward after you complete each goal. Maybe a goal is: finish 4 chapters, review 10 chapters, etc.. A reward is ... whatever you like.

I put myself in the mindset of a superhero or professional athlete when faced with a difficult test. Maybe that sounds foolish, but this is your life. Make a plan and dominate that test.

You know you can do it, so do it. Imagine if you pass? So do it now. Plan it, do it.

Afterwards, you can brag here.

Only you know your self-discipline, but a few ideas.

Write (i.e. physically write down) a timetable setting exactly when you will study, what you will study and for how long.

Then put in cleaning, eating, cooking, games, sleeping etc, i.e. your 'timetable' should be 24/7.

Look at it and be honest with yourself: Can you stick to it and for how long?

Take a week off work (vacation) and in that week try the 'timetable', can you hack it?

If yes, great, do it, if not can you adjust it? If not .............

Remember you NEED personal time, you need social time, you NEED asshole time (very important time that one), so when writing this 'timetable' be realistic.

chenhan:

Thanks,Hugh,i do need a lot of asshole time, your answer is quite advisable!

sadly, from observing my students, i must say chinese have very poor study habits. they try to memorize the answers as opposed to understand the information. they do not take good notes. they essentially write everything instead of just  the important details. you cant spare an hour or 2 a day to go to a quiet cafe and study (don't forget to buy something)

now you are working without a safety net. you do not have a job? what if you fail the test? you will still work in the same field so won't you still get bored? accounting is boring, face it.

good luck to you

GuilinRaf:

Mine never write down anything.

The few times they do, it is because I force them to and then, when the bell rings, they leave their notes behind....

Thank you, crimo, your comment on Chinese students is right to a large extent.I think it has much to do with the country's education system,it focus too much on memory and the so-called standard answers rather than individual answers thought of by students themselves.Answers just a little different from the "standard" ones are viewed as wrong and get no score. That's the very reason why students pay so much attention to memory rather than think on themselves. It prevents people to think critically in the long run. That's also one of the reasons why lots of guys here say many Chinese can't give logical answers.

Actually i lose my passion not because i do a job in the accounting career, but because i have been tired of dealing with chores every day, especially those have nothing to do with accounting. That's the very reason why i need to pass the tests in this year,i can't stand one more day in this company,so,i will move on now.Of course even if i get the certificates,it doesn't mean i have the capability to deal with things more complex in accounting. But it will make it easier for me to get positions i want which could offer me more opportunities to learn things i would never have chances to engage in if i stay in a position and company as the one i am currently in.

At last, thanks again for your answer, buddy!

GuilinRaf:

To be fair Chenhan, while I am not detracting anything said by Crimo or myself, I will point out that the attitude of students and teachers here is in part the fault of many foreign teachers themselves.

I have seen way too many who do not teach, they show movies, they play games, they give everyone 99%, they try to get girlfriends from among the students, etc.

However, when a foreign teacher does show up and try to teach seriously, it is an uphill battle to get the students and other teachers out of the mind-set of foreign teacher being just an amusing clown.

My advice would be to never quit a job unless you have another one lined up or have been accepted into a program to pursue higher education.  First, If you are like most people, you can not survive a long period of time financially without work so don't be naive even if your bank account looks fat now.  Second, having more time on your hands in no way guarantees you will do more with it.  In some cases, having more time on your hands can even make you less productive.  If you want to prepare for a test while you work, do it in the evenings/on weekends but make a plan to do it and stick with it.

chenhan:

I will take your advice into consideration,it's indeed a question quite practical, thank you,Sir!
