Q: What would you say?

Got a young son (just under two) and we're out and about a lot, and i'm getting so fed up with hearing the same questions day after day (Does he speak Chinese? Does he speak English and Chinese? What does he speak? Bla bla language, language-laguage, language, language, language) that i'm seriously thinking of getting a t-shirt or baseball cap made with Chinese characters on it saying 'Do not speak to this man about language, he may kill you'. It's honestly gotten that bad. People are so damn predictable it makes me want to tear my hair out. I actually wish someone would talk to me about the weather for a change. Of course, this is mere hypotheticals. Why? Because i'm not going to walk around in some nerdy t-shirt because i'm a little pissed off. No, i'll come on here instead, and vent. Though if I did choose to be that nerdy, that's what i'd say. But what about you?

Finally, The honeymoon for Mr. China Is Awesome is over. Don't talk about the weather, it will rain all next week.

I have often wondered why everyone has to be nosey about if I speak Chinese or not. I don't care if they speak Chinese or not.

I think you need to figure out if this annoying interest for you and your kid is a good thing for the kid or not. If you think it is, let it go and embrace it. If you think your kid is best served with random strangers staying strangers (and random) then you need your tshirt.

Someone else wrote on the forum, the late Mr Rection if I am not much mistaken, that people wanted to interact with his kid too, in a too intrusive manner. Find that thread, maybe someone wrote something smart there.

mArtiAn:

Oh i'm very conscious of not acting the outsider, even if i'll always be treated as one, simply because that's the example I want to set for my son. I don't make any complaints around him. None. That's why I come on here.

depends on my mood and with whom I am interacting, oddly enough my mood usually seems pretty damn good when it is a youngish (20-40) hotty of the female persuasion. Anyway, if bad mood I tell them why would I want to learn that awful, archaic, soon to be obsolete, pictographic language.  If good mood I would dazzle them with brilliance (ok, baffle them w/ bullshit) and state that the little tyke is quite proficient in Croat, Thai, Armenian, Martian, and his English is coming along nicely, thank you.

JungleLife:

Mandarin becoming obsolete? Don't think that is happening anytime soon, considering it is the # 1 language in the world in terms of number of speakers.

Was she born with curly hair?  My baby is 8 months old, what do they think???  Do they think i take her to the hair stylist to make her hair curly?  I swear if I hear that question one more time, I will ask them if they were born ugly and stupid?

Cheer up, I'll send you an Echina imaginary raincoat, imaginary flash light or one of my Ted Was Here T-shirts.

mArtiAn:

I'll tell you what, i'll swap you a 'Ted Was Here' t-shirt for a pair of 'mArtiAn Was Here' panties. I've been thinking of knocking up a few hundred and passing them around the local lingerie shops. Not that i've been getting into loads of girl's pants, i'm married (somebody kill me), but simply because.........shit, I know girls would buy them and wear them. And by the time enough people understood the meaning, i'd be a f***ing legend in this town! A f***ing legend! Well..........either that or i'd be dead.

I already am a legend and everyone would see my T shirt. The only draw back would be if the girls caught on and threw them away, dudes would pick them up and wear them.

Sounds to me like you are a bit anti-social.   I have kids a little older than yours and get asked the same questions but I think its important to respond nicely even if you are tired as kids easily pickup the behavior they see their parents exhibiting.

mArtiAn:

I agree with you entirely; what I say and do in truth and what I say and do on here are rarely the same things at all. On here i'm mostly talking bol**ks, just for a bit of fun, but yeh, when i'm out and about with my son I try my best to be gracious and sociable, it's just hard sometimes when people are so mind-numbingly boring and painfully predictable. But I manage.

2 days ago, evening, small fried noodles, as i really want to eat them. me, my wife and our son. some man from table beside, where he sit about 10 minits already and always watch us and listen to us, came over and asked : does he can speak chinese ? i watched him, and asked my son in chinese, if he can speak chinese ?  he replied : wo bu hui. the man said, ooh, li hai. than he asked, whether he is mix blooded. i watch my wife and she watched me , relied him, yes, he is. than he asked my wife, whether she is the mother of the boy . that time I want to kill him, and the same time, probably wife of this nerd told him stop asking this. he replied its nothing wrong just asking.

But hey, this is almost daily basis with many strangers.

We have lived before in another area, and there was on supermarket. we came daily for something. there was always same people in. yet, they everytime asked, if our son can talk chinese, even we told them everytime, that he is just 1 year old and can say only mama tata ... all the 3 month we lived there, daily. same people, same question...

Nessquick:

and many times, they also asked, if he can talk english. I taugh my son, let he reply to them : Yes, I can, and you ? i wish you see the faces, when he replied and they : shen ma ? ?

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
