Q: What's the coldest place you've been in China?

Harbin for me. Got to about -32. I hear the coldest place in China is a town called Mohe on the Russian border, gets to -50 or so.

Jiamusi, 6 hours by train N of Harbin, then another 2 hours by bus to Huachuan: -33* C. At that temperature, before saliva hits the ground, it is ice already!

It is amazing to watch, how road crew is organized, when cleaning roads of frozen, icy snow: 3 trucks and bulldozer.

I was going to say my freezer but reading the OP and icnif77's answers my freezer ain't that cold.

However, those temperatures do make me wonder; we've all read comments on this forum about how 'the Chinese' piss and crap in the streets, I wonder if 'they' do that in those temperatures?

MissA:

Yep - I saw it, and wondered if she was going to get a frostbite on her ass.

Your freezer comment made me laugh. Last winter, our school had put us into a less than great apartment, with very bad seals on the kitchen windows. The end result was that our kitchen was about -5 on average throughout winter (the rest of the apartment was okay, thankfully). I seriously considered turning the fridge off... it's not like we were struggling to keep stuff cold, but in the end decided to keep it on, because the fridge was the warmest place in the kitchen, and I needed somewhere to keep the veggies where they wouldn't freeze!

I am not sure about 'crapping outside how to', butt....in Heilongjiang, they 'piss & moan' during the Winter.

Hugh.G.Rection:

Wow! They should make that a winter olympic event, you could have 'artistic' ice crap and 'speed' ice crap, average points from each for the medals. Although I think the artistic should have higher marks, more of a risk, and the men's event should be regarded as more dangerous, more to lose!

Yes, it would certainly add new meaning to the phrase "freezing your bollocks off...:"

I would say the shopping centers, haven't been to the northern places like Harbin yet. On a 35C day in the south, the shopping centers feels like freezers

Just got back from Harbin a couple of days ago. The coldest day we had there was -26c and with some wind chill sucking it down even lower. It was the coldest palce I have ever been and I don't envisage going back. Here in Nanning it was +25c yesterday, a 51c difference. I am never going to complain about Nanning's weather again.

Yeah I am in Daqing, near enough to Harbin. Pretty cold...well that's an understatement really. F**king freezing hence my holiday in the Philippines each winter. I have 2 enclosed verandahs or patio type rooms in the apartment and I use one of them as the refrigerator in winter - sort of walk in set up that holds my beer and stuff. Yes I keep some items in the actual fridge so they don't freeze.

Jiamusi? Yeah anywhere north of Harbin is going to be mind numbingly colder. For an Aussie it's an experience but I do love it when it snows. China looks soooooo clean here after a snowfall!!

Coldest day? -41 at the Harbin Snow and Ice festival 2011. Brutal!

MissA:

We had a super-useful little ledge outside the living room last year that made an excellent freezer. Stick a couple of 500ml beers outside, and five minutes later those babies are chilled perfectly.
