'i want to close my account' - in Chinese of course (or bring a friend)

I did this two weeks ago.  I walked in, said, "bu yao" and made a cutting with scissors gesture on my atm card.  I was out of there in 15 minutes.  This account had less than 10,000 RMB and had just been sitting there for months.  I assume if it were my primary account with something a little more substantial in it, it would have been a bit more drawn out.  Remember, bring your passport!

I have a reality check for you.  If you have a lot of money in the account,  let's say $10,000 or more, you cannot close it in less than 30 days. By law foreigners can only withdraw $500 per day from their dollar account (no limit on yuan account).  I went through this two year ago and furious I could not take my own money out of the bank to go on a vacation to Kenya.

Go to an ATM, take money out, repeat until you have all your money. Simple really.

ATM's have daily limits and possible fee's if you withdraw your money through another banks ATM or even your own banks ATM but in another city (don't even need to be out of province), and it can add up if you want to withdraw a large amount over time.

Quick and easy way is to take your passport to your branch, go to the teller, and simply withdraw all your money.  If it's in RMB, there are no limits, you can take it all out, 10's/100's of thousands of RMB no problem.  Whereas with ATM's you'll be limited to 10,000 per day in most cases.  Once your bank account is empty (or less than 5 RMB), the bank will automatically close it after a period of inactivity which I can't remember (12 or 24 months).
