Q: Which would you rather enjoy: drinking a lot of maotai during a business deal, or at home alone?

Let's say is good brand of maotai, because you deserve it.

And is getting blind drunk.

I hate maotai.

Only fine Kentucky bourbon for me or a good gin-and-vermouth martini.

And it depends what kind of business we all are doing at the dinner

As much as I hate baijiu I partake all the time for business..sometimes good stuff like Maotai and other times normal stuff.    When in Rome....

Staying home alone is boring.

Business deal. If I have to ingest that liquid evil, at least misery will have company.

As for home, I'd much prefer whiskey, rum, tequila... really anything to baijiu. Even the cheapish western booze (like a 60RMB bottle of 100% de agave tequila, or a 90RMB whiskey) is much better. For the price of a 500ml bottle of Moutai, I could but a few larger bottles of single malt Scotch, and actually enjoy drinking them (unlike the Moutai).

Neither, the stuff is devil water i tell you !!!!!  I'll take a bottle of Polish odka anyday over that stuff. I went out to a restaurant with a friend I hadn't seen in 6 months. He lives in another province of China and came to Beijing to visit me. Five of us went through 4 of those small containers of the stuff and I lost my lunch and dinner shortly after.

Worst hangover ever! Glad I forgot most of it. My friends said I was funny, don't remember it though. They were all drunk too. No surprise. To hell with the Devil Water, homemade or otherwise!!!!!!

I would rather drink it during a business meeting. If I have to suffer then at least it will have been worth it (should the meeting be successful).

To think of it that way: drinking copious amounts of maotai doesn't make much sense unless there's somebody watching you do it, and so you can reap the social rewards which outweigh the nutritional/aesthetic benefits of this drink.

Pffffff, no discussion about it. unless you are a monk.

Go for the dinner. Enjoy the company and the bai jiu.
There are a lot of different brands and also different alcohol percentages.
If they know you they might purchase even your favorite brand.

Ofcourse there are people who don't like the drinking.
So make it clear.
if it does not hurt the relationship all good.

And if it does, maybe time to get out of the kitchen as you can stand the heat.

Instead of moaning about the taste.

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
