1) The Crazy English guy, yes.

2) In some cities, it is very common. I used to live in a city called 镇江, and man, guys would hit their wives right out on the streets. Once I saw a guy smash his woman's face into a wall, knock her to the ground, and drag her by the hair as she screamed, and no one even looked.

Now, I've never seen it here where I live now and people in this part of China are more sophisticated, but in some parts of China it is common.

I saw a man slap his wife tonight actually! It was at the Lantern Fair in Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou. She was pouting about something and then his eyes got all big and then BAM! He smacked her hard. It turned into a big spectacle. But anyway, I'm sure the majority of Chinese men don't beat their women.

I've never said anything about Chinese men beating their wives.
I just read about it, mostly here.
It's true it happens all over the world but at least back in the west the police will help them or even arrest the man...here women are on their own if it happens.

yes, this is a blank in our law system.

it is very strange. so many foreigners witness violence. But, as a chinese, I have never met this situation.

derek:

It's not strange that you haven't seen it. It's actually human nature in a way. As a local person you have seen everything here and tend to zone out while I, for my own part am very keen on what's happening around me. I find that my awareness of my surroundings here to be very sharp. It's not uncommon to grab a student or wife by the arm so they don't get sideswiped by a passing vehicle. I point things out to friendsdaily and yes, sometimes they may involve a guy slapping a girl. It happens.

Ok, fair enough. I will add that in Guilin I saw if fairly often and people just stood by. In Beijing I saw it once in the Guo Mao area a couple of months ago. It is not something that happens just in China, it happens everywhere including in the West. But it does happen.

Personally, I've never heard a foreign person ask this, but maybe it falls into the same catagory of "Why do Chinese say that 'foreign men are only in China to bed Chinese women?'"

Both instances do happen, though...

GuilinRaf:

I agree. I was in law enforcement back in the US and there too there is a lot of spousal beating (not just men beating their wives). The difference is that we are required to intervene. Here it happens, but no one cares unless it is someone famous. It is not just limited to China nor is it only a "Chinese thing."

In my mind, for me to say that the majority of Chinese men beat women here I would need to know that at least 50 % or more of the males in China do beat their wives.  Since that would be millions of them, I can not say so.

But I can say that some men in China do beat women, and some husbands do beat their wives often.

And why can I say so ?   Two reasons :
1.- I have seen this happen in three different situations with my own eyes.

2.- A friend, a former GF, and the current one, besides a few Chinese Ladies I am friendly with, have told me in detail, what their lives were with their husbands prior to divorce.  In fact, it was not only beatings, but also "forceful" sex, even against their wishes, and they got their ways with beatings too.

NOW, being very honest, I do know a case of a local "laowai" who did that also a few times, once gave her a black eye and broke two ribs,  another time beat her and her 5 years old boy, and another time threw her down the stairs from a 12 floor and she ended on the 11 floor, almost falling out of the opening on building wall to her death.  They were divorced right after this last incident.

From this we can say that beatings will or are happening in almost every country.  On some, the laws will protect the woman and the Police will intervene.  On others, it is a family matter.  The extend of this situation is what needs to be qualified.

Question: So, is the Crazy English Guy considered to be, once again, highly regarded since the incident?

Oh in terms of that guy, his western wife probably "made him" do it....

Why do you think foreigners think Chinese men beat women? Well, a lot of them do, but... I'm guessing it's because:

- You've never visited rural China, where 65% of the men -- perhaps more -- pretty much abuse their wives. I've met some older women who developed a hunchback because of their husband's abuse. Their parent's response? "You must bear this. It is your lot in life, you can only accept your fate. It's a terrible thing to find a bad husband, but it's even worse to get a divorce."

- You've never seen all the married women walking around with black eyes, and visible bruises all over their bodies (face, neck, arms, legs) if they didn't cover them up.

- You've never seen a woman getting the shit knocked out of her in public, while everyone else stands around watching and/or laughing. When you try to help the woman, you have to deal with a bunch of retards who attack you for trying to help her. Or worse yet: the woman joins in and attacks you for trying to help her!

Even worse, you try to help her and then she gets an even worse beatdown back home when her husband takes his anger out on her.

- You've never read your own Chinese literature which talks about this, especially Three Kingdoms where a woman says it's okay if her husband beats her, if only that will calm him down and make him feel better. WTF.

- You've never paid much attention to the older movies which exposed this.

- You've been living under a rock, or in a very good environment and have never witnessed this. Count your blessings.

Like HappyExPat said, women get beat everywhere, but it may also depend on what kind of protection they can get. I'm not saying ALL Chinese people do it, but I find it to be disproportionately prevalent in East and Southeast Asian countries. For the record, I know a Chinese friend of mine was beaten by her two foreign boyfriends.

its funny that we "foreigner" see a lot of things that occur in china but chinese people dont seem notice anything, or could it be the fact that nobody wants to know,  or is it  "defend china at any cost" even if you are wrong

Well, I think that Chinese men beat women because they are naturally better at sports.  Chinese men can run faster, throw further and swim better than Chinese women.  So it is only natural for them to beat their women.

What?  We aren't talking about sports?  My bad.  Sorry.

I saw a guy grab his girlfriend by the hair in San Li Tun one night and try to drag her off. Unluckily for him two Chinese guys with a more progressive mindset saw, took exception and gave him a lickin'. It was one of the best things I ever saw in China.

I've never seen campaign adds about domestic abuse like I do in my country. It is lack of awareness that makes it more common and tolerated.

I don't know first hand if Chinese men beat their wives/gf's. But I do know that little boys hit girls just as freely as they would hit other boys; and just as hard too.

To be honest this is a very common thing and the women then go on to beat their children. Have you ever seen a Chinese mother smack her child? Not like in the west on their bum, they go for the headshot and body blows!

stan118:

dude i see that all the time, and i often see other ladies laugh like its funny and the child is all in tears
