Q: Why do my house plants keep dying in Beijing?
I never had a problem raising houseplants before coming to China but now everything I buy dies within a few months even though i make sure to give them the correct amount of water and light.
Water and light. Good you named two of the things that they need. Now you do know that CHina has dry air so it's easier for them to die and wither away. Same thing happened with my plants. I had a cactus that I bought and some plants that the landlord left here. They all died within a several month time frame.

You do know China has extreme humidity as well as dry air. In the south everything is wet at this time of year
It could be too much water. I'm not sure if you see this at certain times of the year. Plants need to dry out and be watered. With the humidity in China, if the plants don't dry out, the roots will rot and the plant dies.
Try to make your home-made watering system if you can't decide the mount of water that your plants need.
It could be the quality of the soil. Maybe there are not enough nutrients? It's also possible that the pollution is killing them, but if you keep them inside most of the time, that may not be the problem.
