Communicative Language TeachingThe communicative approach stresses the importance of language functions (such as agreeing, inviting, suggesting, etc.) as opposed to reliance only on grammar and vocabulary. This approach also suggests that if students have enough exposure to the language and the opportunity to use it then language learning would in effect, take care of itself. Activities in CLT typically require students to use the language in real life situations, so role-play and simulation have become popular with this method. CLT places far more emphasis on completion of the task than the accuracy of the language.

Not in my previous school.
The problem being the role-play. Students are too shy or too unwilling (for whatever reason) to participate. Even when required to, they just kept silent looking at their hands or their feet.
Out of the typical class of 30 students, maybe four or five would actively participate, another four or five could be "dragged" to participate and the rest simply would not move or say a word.
So , the program was dropped after just one year.
CLT works best for one on one classes. My wife uses it all the time.
It hasn't. The officially required method of teaching in China is "CLT with Chinese characteristics," which means it is nothing like CLT is supposed to be. In China, it is an eclectic mix of primarily the outdated GMT, and secondarily ALM. The CLT tag is used to give the illusion that China employs modern education methods.
