I was looking at train schedules to go from Chengdu to Xi'an for a weekend... just for an idea of timing and stuff. To get from Cheng to Xi'an, it's about 12 hours. To return, most of the trains are 25 hours and up. Why?

They do more stops on the return trips and depending on the train, some of them stop for 20 to 30minutes at a time.
Having the train pull into stations along the way for ridiculous amounts of time was the easiest solution for fixing train schedules. Wasting hours of the passengers' time is a lot less work than doing all the calculations to create a smooth running operation.

Thanks.... this made me laugh. Maybe I'm just overtired ;) But it makes sense. I had a feeling it was something like this
not true here are some examples if you are using chinahighlights they list the wrong travel you must check each train schedule and calculate it yourself

Damn... who taught them math?!?!? If you look at the trains going back to Chengdu, the durations are like 26-35 hours! But, you're right, if you look at the actual depart/arrival time, it's 15 or 16 hours. wtf? Another lesson learned.

just more bad translation,, ,,,i found lots,,, i read a sign in Yangshou from police,, said if sometin bad happen not to panic and call police,,wtf?,,think they meant don't panic, but call police?
The Chinese hi-speed trains are specially built. It depends on the earths rotation and the gravitational forces exerted on the train also as to the time. Scientist Dr. Emmett "Doc." Brown reveals that the Delorean DMC-12 has been modified, which generates 1.21 gigawatts of power into a device he calls the flux capacitor. Doc also explains that the train travels to a programmed date and time upon reaching 88 miles per hour.
I think the trains get lost too, I took the train to Xi'an ,car #1 going east R>L, in the morning my car was going the other way L>R,, not sure if I was affected by time travel tho. It must have been a historical sleeper car because the toilet has never been modified by cleaning, ever. i hate to do it, but I think I'm burning all my shoes that I wore in China.
