Q: My Wife has an Opportunity to Teach Yoga in China. Looking for opportunities for a tradesmen!

Thanks in advance for any replies thoughts and comments to my post. New to this site and have found a heap of wonderful information from a wide variety of topics about China. Currently I'm living in BC, Canada and own a business designing and installing kitchen cabinets. I'm looking into potential jobs in China as my wife has an opportunity to teach yoga and we would love to explore and travel throughout the area.
Moving to a new country reinventing myself and a business in the Kitchen Cabinet industry seems quite far fetched. Even working for an employer not knowing the language would be a challenge in itself. As a Canadian my first thought was teaching English. However due to the lack of teaching experience and no degree to speak of, it looks like working legally in China isn't going to happen unless I get a degree. I've read many post's showing many teacher's working under non work visa's and I wouldn't want to go down this avenue.
So that being said my other work related experience is working in tourism. I've worked as a bartender/server. I've had office jobs in call support/email support positions. Coaching local sports teams. I've been told modeling or acting is something that I should look into abroad.
Not entirely sure what i'm asking, maybe just want to rebound the idea's flowing in my head with someone emerged in the culture. And after reading hours and hours thru this site I feel as if you need to ask before you shall receive.
I'm 27 years old, strong work ethic, very personable and patient Canadian,

Why would you want to work in China? It would appear that you have a comfortable life in Canada and coming here would be a step back. Yoga isn't that popular here as it is although it's becoming so in bigger cities like Shanghai and Beijing. Also, if you have to spend some time getting qualified to teach, then it's better to teach back home. At the moment, the employment of foreign teachers is under scrutiny with visa laws changing, authorities clamping down on work permits and such, I'd think this isn't the right time. Other Asian countries like Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand might prove more worthwhile.
Watching a girl do yoga makes me too horny.. Thanks but no thanks.

Just teach English. For the most part, that's all you'll ever find for a job. It pays decently, though, and you can save almost all of it.

Hulks right, I've seen the sport teaching sector go up in the recent years.. Trading, IT and some other small jobs pop up, but Teaching is our fruitful market..
The main reason would be to work abroad and travel. Just to experience another culture and another life. She's been offered a really great position teaching yoga and I would want to come with her. So just looking for some work for myself.

Honestly, ignore all the whiners -- even me, when I whine. Go to China and enjoy yourself. You might like it, you might not. You'll likely have lots of BCDs, but it's an unforgettable lifetime experience. Just go for it.

Just make sure you and your wife come on Z visa's, meaning your wife can sponsor you as her dependent and you could do freelance. I'm willing to bet there would be a small chance for your skills if you can design kitchens. .
As a married man, I wouldn't take the risk of coming here on any other visa.
I think it's noble that you're trying different avenues to make it work for your wife to be able to come and teach yoga here. I live in Beijing yoga is certainly becoming more popular here. Although you are going to have quite a challenge to work as you already seem to know. Teaching here is becoming more difficult and it seems a degree is essential these days. I don't think you could bartend here because of the language, although MAYBE in an upmarket western restaurant in a big city. A friend of mine was a football (soccer) coach in Shanghai for internaional schools and through that got a lot of job offers to coach teams, and he couldn't speak a single work od Chinese. Not sure if these are solid options but just giving you an idea of what's going on this side.

Thanks for all the input. Had to brainstorm what BCD meant. Urban dictionary didn't really help much. Came up with some unusual ideas of what you were saying, lol. I'm guessing "Bad Culture Days"?

She will have a Z visa through the Yoga job. I'm not sure how it would work for me if I don't have an employer. Why is it exactly you wouldn't risk coming on another Visa?

Oh then don't worry man, 100% you'll get your dependent visa if your wife has a Z visa, just make sure your wife has told that yoga company to include your name on the application under family members. It'll help if you get your marriage contract translated into Chinese.. Other visa's will be very difficult to renew and cost mega bucks to renew..

Brother1818 is right, There are bad days, so a dependent visa will help you, your marriage and stay in China stay safe.. Its about $1000 or more to renew visa's within China, but to renew dependent visa maybe $120..

FYI, and this is very important! The laws were revised this year regarding dependent visas.
You must have a certified translation of your marriage certificate (spouse) or birth certificate (for child) that is stamped by the Chinese embassy in the country where you were married or the child was born. I had to make a trip to the US to get my son's birth certificate stamped by the Chinese embassy in the US as he was born there. This took effect in JAN.

Don't worry about the teaching ilegally part, it's not as bad as it sounds. However if you try and land a job with a big company such as EF (English First) the salary sucks but they can get you a working visa without the degree.
