Do you actually have the marriage certificate, if not can you get it ? That would enable you to apply for a residence permit for a year, to buy time to get your wifes visa for US sorted out.

You likely need to apply at the PSB where you are registered, so you cannot do this after leaving Hunan.

From Changsha you could go to Hong Kong and...

Agreed about the expat market shrinking, and China is actually passing laws to hasten this. As example, the big four accounting firms have been told that they must employee 80% Chinese citizens by 2017. Additionally, all senior partners in the firms must be Chinese citizens.

This has the big four very nervous about their credibility, given that Chinese legislation forbids...

On the first day of every semester, I set rules for the class, and then enforce them. This takes many Freshmen by surprise, for while they are used to rules, they are not used to the consequences of breaking them.

All in all, I feel that I'm pretty patient. I don't lose my temper, but make light of a lot of things that happen. It's "ebb and flow," but I let them know on...

About 3 men for every 2 women.

The census covered 234829 residents from Hong Kong SAR, 21201 residents from Macao SAR, 170283 residents from Taiwan, and 593832...

In theory, contact SAFEA - State Administration for Foreign Expert Affairs. http://www.safea.gov.cn/english/

In reality - probably very difficult :(

In all probability, the school doesn't have the legal right to hire foreigners either.

    Be aware...

Hi harryjohn. This is a fair enough question, but to be honest with you, I'm kind of tired of reading threads about culture and stereotypes on this board. I try to avoid participating in them.

...Fine, I'll bite: Stereotypes are the knee-jerk explanations we come up with while we try to make sense of a culture different from ours. The trouble with ever trying to talk about...

I can only give you my experience, can not vouch for any company's reliability because all have problems like missing items, etc.

For 15 years I have ,mailed boxes ( 2 to 3 per year) first from USA to China, using USPS, then from China to USA using China Postal Services, surface mail rate.  It does take from 2 to 3 months to arrive, but have not lost one package yet,...

Because by the time you get that old, most of your life is behind you, and it's a great way to see where you've been.

The two most widely recognised and used systems for teaching young children more than one language are 'One Parent One Language' (OPOL) and 'Minority Language at Home' (MLH). Firstly though educational psychologist have proven that children under about the age of 6 don't 'learn' languages as they have to when they're older, they 'absorb' them, there is something in the brain that 'switches off...

Well, I'd be worried about how clean he is. I would be really worried unless he got tested, and even then, I might not want anything to do with him. I don't feel it is wrong to have sex with prostitutes, but STDs can have large consequences, and are often transmitted unknowingly. It's not worth the risk. Every sexual encounter adds to that risk, whether it's with a prostitute or not. If he was...

Well I'm a teacher and I've just renegotiated my contract up from 100 hours a month to 120 hours a month teaching AND office time. That is about the same as I would work in the UK but in the UK that would be almost entirely teaching time, marking, lesson plans, schemes of work, all would be done in my own time.

Here I can get all my planning done in the 'office hours. Of course the pay...

I used to live there - I left a while ago, so my info is not all that current.

I never felt in any danger whatsoever, far from it. I found the local people to be friendly and welcoming, and the mix of cultures fascinating. I didn't see or experience any major issues in my time there (employers notwithstanding). Xinjiang is absolutely beautiful once you get...

Oranges and moon cakes are traditional gifts.  Or tangerines.  Basically, gold colored fruit is supposed to be good luck.

If you are traveling from one province to another to give the gifts, then something "famous" (typically some sort of food) from your province would be a good gift too.

My wife works for a Chinese airline company and even Chinese flight attendants dislike Chinese passengers. After observing how Westerners behave on an airplane and then being subjected to the Chinese, these ladies have developed an intense dislike for their "country-fellows" lack of manners and common courtesy. My wife is Chinese and I hate to say it but, having lived here for 4 years now and...

It's the beds, honest. many years ago I read where the experts said that a hard, firm bed was the best for your back and your posture and for a good sleep. As the years passed my choice in beds got fluffier and the experts all now agree that a bed that fits the contours of the body and is reasonably soft is much better for you. One thing I did change some years ago was my penny pinching habit...

Set the ground rules clearly on the first day, and stick to them.

You're a big guy, you can use that, if anyone is playing up, don't shout, just walk right up close to them, invade their personal space, and stay silent and still. They'll quickly come round.

Depending on the size of the class and whether you're stuck with a curriculum, discussions on...

The blocking of VPN’s started some time ago when the government was having its conference in Beijing (I think). The new communications minister has taken it a step further and installed a device that now seeks out and blocks all VPN communications, particularly those provided by Chinacom. You have two settings usually on your VPN – Open Web and Open VPN. The Open Web mode is...

It depends on your local area. Head outside to see one of those delivery guys on the pedal tricycles (or electric bike) that delivers water, there is usually a phone number on them somewhere.  If not, ask him for a card.  He'll probably ask where you live, tell him your address and see if he delivers there (if you see him in your general neighborhood, it's a safe bet he does.) These...
