I haven't ever worked for a local company. But I have worked for internationals that are still international (good) and internationals where the Chinese offices have become localized (bad). The difference here is:

It has a couple of thoughts behind it . Firstly it discourages people from pushing them all the way home and then dumping or selling them , The second is that people will want their money back and the easy way is to plug them back into the shopping cart bay were they came from thus saving on staff looking for carts . In Australia the cart is worth $300 to replace and the local councils fine...

When I first moved into Beijing, I was placed into a complete cockroach motel by my esteemed training center, and I was pretty much stuck there until I could find another place. Training centers in China take really great care of you like that. Roaches in the kitchen, the bathroom, the living room, and, yes, my room. I managed to get them out of my room by scrubbing everything down like mad....

In China, UNION PAY is the one used. Normally, Union Pay does have reciprocal agreements with others like Cirrus, Plus, Master, Visa, etc, so your card should work .
Start visiting ATM's from different banks to see if your card works on one. Your real problem may come in when asked for the PIN number, in China is six digits, abroad is only 4. So, input your PIN as 00XXXX....

Since 1996 I have been doing extensive traveling abroad from USA. Have exited and entered many different Customs within USA and abroad, always with my laptop on a shoulder bag with me. We should make one thing perfectly clear, The new regulation we announced on July 1st. That was just an "Announcement", These new visa laws will start on this coming September 1st 2013.
So for now its just a scare tactic thats working. Trust me many will feel the pinch after the next turnover of F Visa workers by February 2014.

Not in the field of education, but I have set up my own WFOE and helped two other companies do the same. My WFOE took three weeks from application to holding the business licence. The other companies I have helped did so in less than four weeks. Usually, the government will allow one or two years to come up with the registered capital but almost always demand that at least 20% of the capital...

It shouldn't be an issue. My hearing wasn't checked in the medical and if your hearing is fine with the aids no-one will care.
Do expect far less tact though compared to your own country. There doesn't seem to be any real awareness of minor disabilities.

In Beijing, I assumed it was one of those ostentatious displays of affluence where people gain/have face by flashing all the money that they may/may not have. Sort of like, how a lot of people in China cannot just go to the park--they have to have a nice chair, and sit around with an iPad, wearing pricey sunglasses, exc. Or how some parents dress their 3 year olds in pricey designer business...

There seems to be many different options here. i have recently married my Chinese partner and want get to know my bride parents a little better since we can't communicate (I'm Australian). I am now moving to Beijing to be with my wife who is currently there now. She tells me that only her father (who has influence) at a govt level can not really help me in my career orientated relationships...

Well, you could and undoubtedly there are many people now working in China that have done exactly the same thing. However, you have to ask yourself if it is morally and ethically right to do so. As a teacher in China, you will encounter numerous incidences of cheating, plagiarism, dishonesty or just good old fashioned bare faced lying.
