Yup, I know all about this.
The taxi drivers have totally cut me off hundreds of times without warning because there is a fare. There should be a checklist of mentalities you need to realize when you come to China:

love going to my GF's parent's home for new years. they love me and i love them. the food is great, the company is fantastic, and i'm only expected to enjoy myself. i cannot wait to spend my third spring festival there. now, as for my girlfriend, she hates going back because her mother and grandmother put her to work! she tried to convince me to stay in this year...

I like the Home Inn chain. They are consistently clean and well kept in the ones Ive stayed in all over China, inluding Shenzhen.

7 years in china but ive been home for two soooo 5. I try to make it christmassey when im here. Usually catered a full turkey dinner and invited my friends over for secret santa and whatnot. This year i saw it snowed in dalian, so i hurried and bought flights. Not much snow... more ice, but its cold as hell compared to shenzhen, booked a turkey dinner with the wifey and try to make it special...

QQ is great in terms of a chat vehicle. It is also great in terms of being spyware, a virus generator, an all-around PC hijacker and the lack.
I do use QQ but I use a version that has been sanitized by the Malaysian government. Just search through google. You can find the version there.

In my country we have many races, cultures and shades of skin colour. Lot's of different people with something in common. They are all citizens of my country. Everyone has the same rights as everyone else.
I am proud of my country for that.
My daughter is half British and half Chinese. She was born here and has a Chinese birth certificate....

I just married a Chinese girl. Her parents are wishy washy about the whole idea. one day they love me the next day they hate me. But we love each other and she lives with me now in the city where i work. We have cultural adjustments to make and learning to deal with them by communication. She is an English teacher , i am a English consultant and Educator. we learned communication is the key....

School can assign as many hours per week/month as it is stated in the Contract. If School assign 'overtime' without your agreement, you can walk away from the School with RP intact. School is in Contract breach.
If you signed Contract with US$ 3000 fine for early Contract termination, US$ 3000 fine is legal. Same as anything written in the Contract bearing your signature...

Have you considered talking to your University/College? Back home they have departments that are set up for situations like this.
Also, if you have no money now then how are you going to have money in the future to pay back the loan?

I'm seconding Hulk's Yunnan suggestion. Lugu Lake is really lovely. Though I recommend going to the not touristy side of the lake (I'm sorry I've forgotten whether that is the east or west side).

I'd advise against giving too little. You should, at least, cover the expense of your lunch. My wedding was about Y2500 per table, so Y250 per guest. We received anywhere between Y200-1000 from our guests.

Just don't. I avoid rush hour as much as possible. I'd prefer to stay late at work than enter that hell. I'll sometimes cycle part of the way so that I don't have to be on for quite as long.
