I think you're misrepresenting a lot of people.

I, for example, live in China because I enjoy traveling, have a leisurely lifestyle here, and am attached to my girlfriend. I didn't move here as some kind of statement about the US (especially as I'm from Australia).

Criticising the United States while living in China does not indicate hypocrisy....

@louis In the case of Eastern Europe in the 80's, there is a major difference : the notion of civil society existed, because Eastern European experienced it before the post-WWII communist rule. So in general, people in East Europe were more keen to question thing, being grumpy, and *act*. Prague Spring, for instance. When things like Prague Spring failed, people moved on something else. In the...

It seems ostensibly that the problem has been resolved. However, I don't think this approach will work fundamentally. One must be clear about what are the root causes of near-sightedness. From my perspective, there're four important factors that have caused myopia:

    1. Bad eye using habits.  Reading posture matters most when it comes to the factor. Over-close reading contributes...

i have read stories on this forum of Chinese not turning on the A/C in summer, yet willing to splash out large sums of money on the latest iPhones or the latest designer fashions.

Bargain hard over a few mao in the market, yet serve enough food to feed an army at a meal, with a lot of it being wasted

to me that seems like inverse thrift.

Yes, i spend money to make my life...

In my experience most of them know about this kind of stuff already, they are well aware of Facebook and Youtube. They just don't really care because there is access to local made alternatives that are in some aspects superior.

I find that mentioning controversial topics can go well in a class as long as you don't air your views (if they are opposing to the students) too...

News at 11 : a forum targeting 0.01% of a country's population, read by 0.00001% of the population, triggered an unstoppable revolution. Thanks to their devastative rhetoric skills, the arm-chair guerrillas managed to wake-up a nation of zombies from their jingoist, conservative, greed-fueled <insert here your favorite adjectives> stupor.

Censor, I know you just wet your pants....

Lol I suppose you are right. I really want to focus on them learning oral English. They can read and write pretty well but what good does that do if they can't speak it or understand it when it is spoken to them? My boss agrees with me as well and is giving me freedom to do what I think is best since the parents would prefer than the students learn oral english as well.

I see two ways to proceed:

    1. The Chinese method

Give some vague, noncommittal answers, and ensure that all parties, including yourself, are confused as to what is happening. If he asks whether you are in love with him too, say "yes" (to begin with). This is because a) you don't want to hurt his feelings, and b) it's the opposite of...

    Oh god.

Let me explain this to you, American.

America isn’t socialist. It isn’t becoming socialist. Instituting a mockery of universal healthcare – which funnels trillions of dollars of tax money into private healthcare companies – is not socialist. Some Americans (not all, but you are definitely one) have this glaring logical disconnect...

    1. She should find one or more articles in the Contract, her employer doesn't respect (full fill), i.e. 'no TV in the apartment'; 'late salary'; 'more hours required to work then per Contract', and so on...

    2. Then, she should get herself new employer (RP sponsor).

    3. After that, she should submit Resignation notice to her employer...

Nope. But if my wife wanted a divorce I would let her keep everything.

I can sort of see the reason for the compensation request though.  A 26 year old girl might go out with a guy, and after 5 years he finishes with her. She will be a 31 year old shengnu.  The family might not be too happy about that.

If you want a Chinese GF...

It is difficult to answer that question, because we don't know what you are emphasizing.

There is an article on this site about a person who transitioned from English teaching into a non-teaching job. He gave a lot of tips on finding a job and wrote about his experience. Useful read.

My "Western" breakfast has been veggie shakes during the week. And bacon and eggs on toast with tomatoes for the weekend. Normally they both take about the same time. I feel it depends on weather or not you want something delicious! (bacon) Or something that makes you feel good. I feel way better having a veggie shake rather than bacon and eggs.

    Veggie shake includes:...

Realistically? Not in a long while. In numerous reports, surveys and guesstimates, the number of people learning English hovers around 300 million. Ok, so maybe this is a little too many, so let's say we discount this by 50%, you'd still have 150 million. Let's say the average class is around 30 students, including all forms of schools private and public and each teacher takes 3 classes, you...

I'm in Shenzhen too. I've known WEB well for the last 7 years,  they always got checked because of this type of situation.

First before we talk about how to remove your name from the blacklist, lets accept the reality here, it's WEB's fault and your fault.  You accepted the risk to work on a L visa when you knew deep down it's illegal to do so and you...

My bro came to visit me in China, and we went for a month-long road trip in Sichuan. We had a blast. My parents also came, touring Yunnan with a small group. They also had a great time. In both case, it was in deep countryside, with the toilets from Hell and all those things, but they just had good memories to bring back home.

I think China, as a travel trip, is great. You got all the...

Thank you all for the advice! I am wide awake and doubtful I will sleep at all before I leave to catch my flight in 2.5 hours. I'm not going to lie.. I'm getting some slight cold feet. I know it's too late to turn back now, and I don't want to at all.. But it's finally hit me that this is actually happening. It will all be OK. It's an adventure.. This is just the beginning... I can do this...

    1. Because what else are they going to do all day?

I encounter the same thing when I visit my girlfriend's family (they live in a small village). Every mundane task becomes an occupation and talking point for the whole family. If someone goes outside to look at a carrot, everyone does. They will stand around talking and pointing, then eventually wander...

Don't have children with this guy. Why would you marry someone before meeting their family at the very least talk to them via skype. This is 2014.

You can contact a private investigator in the U.S. online to find out if he is married. Then once you find proof that he is married, wait until he gets back to China and have him arrested.

Also, you can contact various women's...

I completely understand your argument but not all foreigners in China have this mentality....maybe a lot on this forum...but certainly not all.

After some time in China I became the opposite due to circumstance.

Being wined and dined and treated like a rock star made me mostly fearless in China...even favor at the PSB due to business partners speaking on my...
