Q: Have people here taken the whole Wu Mao thing too far?
People here have become too freakin paranoid...sometimes accusing almost everyone of being a wu mao....IMO.
I would suggest everyone just lighten up a little.
Too many posts about wu mao's have made us all paranoid.
OK....I am not talking about the twins...this is another matter entirely.
So really...have people here taken this to the extreme or what?
Some people here just accuse anyone they don't like of being a wu mao. Even if someone is super positive about China on here (even to an unrealistic level), I simply think they are annoying. If you don't like a person, just give them a thumbs down. There's no reason to go off on them accusing them of being wu mao. I for one have not been paranoid. While I think that all the regulars on here have become a sort of defunct family, some of them drink a little bit of the loopy juice, just saying.
I didnt even know what a wumao was until i started using this site, and I've been here 4 years. so yeah, I would say people on this site are a little sensitive.
I dont know how it happened, did you genuinely have some wumaos on here in the past?
I dont think the wu mao population has grown in a good while now.
The skitso club has got a couple of new members though
as for the drunk posting I plead guilty on the odd occasion
the rest of the time is just lack of medication
I must admit some of the answers from some people have been a little nasty and displayed low level of intelligence they could have just written

I accused that chick last night, because she was 100% positive about China, built ridiculous strawmen, and MOST IMPORTANTLY posted 4-8 times in a row on several questions, even with no replies, turning the threads into a pgdn nightmare and effectively ending all conversation. Some of her posts were one sentence at the top, a few hundred blank lines, and then another sentence at the bottom. On any thread that had something negative to say about China.
I've had my doubts about wumao accusations on this site before, but the multiple post thing is just too much like what wumao do on Chinese sites. On Chinese sites, making a bunch of posts in a row is their main weapon. They're basically just pgdn warriors. And they smash down on the carriage returns as well.
If she wasn't a wumao, then wtf? What in life would lead a grown adult to be like that, with no promise of financial reward? It would be like if you were in the states, and put on a McDonald's uniform, and started giving people hamburgers and fries, and if people asked you if you worked at McDonald's you said, "Why, no, of course not. I'm independently wealthy and don't need the money. I just have a burning passion for the lowest end of the fast-food spectrum."

Which is the only thread of hers from last night's attack the mods missed. First, she made six consecutive posts, mostly of hype and nonsense; noisy hype for no reason beyond hype itself, cursing out her invisible enemies in a dialogue of the deaf. On the sixth post she ran out of things to say, so she posted one short sentence, then about two pages worth of carriage returns, and then another short sentence. When someone posted their own legitimate opinion, she made three more consecutive posts (now off-topic), then added a lengthy comment that was copied and pasted, effectively killing the thread. Few people have the patience to pgup/pgdn through all that garbage to get to the substantial parts of the thread, which means she has earned her 5 kuai.
That is exactly how a wumao behaves on Chinese sites. Exactly to a T.

Tell me, if she wasn't a wumao, why would she cling to every potentially sensitive thread, and make 6 (exactly six) consecutive (off-topic, distracting) posts about absolutely nothing until she could be sure the thread was dead. I'm open to alternative explanations.

I wasn't critisizing you....many people here latley have been quick to attack new people who post here. Maybe she is bad with computers or doesn't understand how this site works yet. Many people here still refuse to use the comments and always post answers still. Too many new people are scared off with attacks here of late IMO.

Thanks, Dude, for giving me a break. I appreciate it! I'm not sure I've got this figured out yet, but I think maybe I'm getting the hang of it now.
I'm getting the impression that it's not good to be a China lover here. I mean, we wouldn't be here if we hated the place and resented the culture, the people, and the way things work here like so many do. It's not perfect but I figure since I am the foreigner it's up to me to adapt and adjust to where I'm at, not the other way around. Makes sense to me.
I don't have to be here. I'm here by choice.
I've been posting on forums for years so got lots of experience in that regard. The format here is a little different.
I'm not inexperienced or unaware of the problems we westerners meet on a daily basis here. I'm used to the staring, to the challenges of communication, challenges in the workplace, cultural differences, etc. etc. etc. I deal with those just like the rest of you who are living and working here. I'm treated with respect & kindness by those who I've gotten to know on a more personal level.
It's not like I'm a newbie since we lived in HK for a number of years where all the same challenges I mentioned above, exist, in perhaps on bit of a lesser scale since HK is more 'western'. China sure has changed in the past couple decades. Amazing! You think life is difficult here now? You should have been here in the 80s! lol
There's always more ways than one to look at things. ATTITUDE is a huge factor in how we deal with things and affects and influences success on every level. Success or lack of it is often determined by it.
Just a few thots for consideration.

No no no no, Shining. It was the Americans. While the hosts were single handedly fighting the Japanese, the Flying Tigers had nothing to do so they invented Calligraphy, Silk, Porcelain-China and gunpowder before being re-absorbed into the US Military.
I've always thought you, Kchur and Crimo are wu-maos! (got my eye on Jnus as well!!) I did suspect PhilB as well, cos the kangaroo was too corny, but now he's changed it, I'm not so sure....
I'm also thinking of petitiioning the Aussie government to introduce a similar system... 50c/post... only 28 posts per hour and I'm on minimum wage!!!

Haha, what I find hard to believe is that people who have lived here for years have never heard of it. I guess that means they don't read anything about China online? There's a lot of things that people will not discuss in public. Honestly, not knowing those things can give people a very rosy view of China. For me, it hasn't changed how I live my life here, but it does give me perspective.

It took me about a month before I heard of the Wu Maos, and THAT was from my students.
I think with all the attacks and trolls we've seen, some of the regulars are a bit apprehensive of new people. Can you blame? I admit, I'm not so easy to trust new "faces" until they've posted a few times. I'm not rude to the newbies (unless they deserve it).
While some of the dolts around might actually be wu mao, I think the majority are just bored yayas who are typing with one hand cuz they're getting off on irritating us. We are their wet dream!

kchur....I completely agree with you on that guy...it's been a long time now, but how could I forget him.
shining: i've been openly petitioning to become a foreign wu mao.
but jnus gave me an interesting thought. maybe a lot of the chinese people that pose as foreigners are not wu maos. maybe they are just ashamed of who they are and want to be something different.
