when i first arrived in China in 2012 in Chengdu. I had a conversation with a fella in his mid 20s, and he said that his grandparents are in like a "perpetual  culture shock" within their own country. They were awed, amazed, confused, stressed, shocked, dumbfounded, etc. simply due to the rapid changes in infrastructure, technology, standard of living, quality of living, wealth generation...

I would suggest to continue west to Chengdu and then south a little to Kunming or Guilin.

But honestly, a lot of people are right on the money. Taking them traveling during this busy holiday period will most likely be disastrous. You should take them to a small town or village and let them experience China the proper way.

You can't get Z in China. You must exit China, most likely to your home country or HK (if you're lucky!), and apply for Z at Chinese Embassy.

    1. Sign Contract with employer, which must be authorised to hire foreigners;

    2. Employer will apply for your Working permit and Invitation letter at SAFEA (Foreign Expert Bureau). It will take around 30 days or less to get...

The Law or regulation states that it should be done at the closest Police station to the place you live.  If they do not do it there, they should inform you of where you must go.

The idea behind you registering at the closest one to your residence is for them to know that you are there now, and thus they "can keep an eye on you".  At least that is what I was told by the...

For me at least, if you care about how people judge you then you need to care about the criteria they use to judge you by. If you don't their opinion is irrelevant.

If they feel you're nothing because you don't have the latest iphone for example, and your car is much cheaper than theirs, your house is worth less, your job not as prestigious etc and you get upset by this,...

My wife just signed up for a full package with Ping An. No monthly payments. Yearly and it was about 7000rmb including Life Insurance. I assume that age and existing issues is a big factor in the price.

Personally, I thought the benefits were a bit ordinary but according to the missus, they were the best she could find.

There seems to be a fairly large expat community in Qingdao. They even have a community newspaper called The Qingdao Expat. For latest info your best bet is probably to hook up with them. You are in luck that Qingdao is well known for its fresh seafood supply, a key ingredient with Laksa dishes. See if this helps? ...

Not consuming fake alcohol - basically, stick to bottled tsingtaos and the hangovers should never be too bad.

Actually "Festival of lights" does sound cooler. If all the LEDs and neons on the buildings would only be on once per year for this day, it would be great. In our apartment back home, when it is dark outside, it is dark outside. Which is awesome, because then we can see stars. At some point a couple of years ago, they turned on the lights on a building 800m from our bedroom window, it was like...

What Stiggs said... If I go to BJ or SH I take the subway but in general I just walk a couple blocks to get away from the parasites around the train station.

In most cities it's the same: not only will they try to rip you off and not use the meter, they harass everyone to the point I've had to physically push them away from me. "Hellooooooooo taxeeeeeeeeeee da che! Qu nali...

Yes, definitely. I've found that many Chinese people have no idea that McDonalds, KFC etc.... is bad for you.  Their eating habits are changing, but with absolutely no awareness about healthy food and a balanced diet.  I also read somewhere that the diabetes rate in China is skyrocketing, but most Chinese don't even know what diabetes is.

Sedentary lifestyle? Check! Lowered time for P.E. in school and work? Check! More fast foods (let's not kid ourselves, even the "Chinese" brands are still sugar, oil, and trans fats).? Check! I'm already married so no need for girls to look their best? Check!

Jeez, even my head is getting fatter!

Go to the business (main) branch of ICBC in your city and buy American Express traveler's cheques.

Bring all of your usual identity cards, passport, note from your mommy but you can get unlimited traveler's cheques or a certified cheque cut.

I agree with Expat on this one.

The market determines who is desirable as an English teacher. Right or wrong, it's how it is. Also the law. In theory at least ,you need to be from a select few countries in order to get a proper visa and if a school wants to operate within the law then your options are limited.

The market, and the law here has decided they prefer...

If you complete the Contract, your employer is required to submit Release letter and FEC Cancelation Certificate in 30-days after your last working day. ------> Chinese law

Your new employer will need both documents to legally employ you, and extend your Residence permit.

When I first moved to China. I kept hearing weird noises. After a few hours I realised I could hear a big cat roaring. I thought that it couldn't possibly be a tiger in the middle of the city. I got up and looked outside. I could see the park. I heard another roar. I looked closer at the park and then I realised. The park was in fact Tianjin zoo.

Well, one way to know what you're getting is to cook at home. I for one love cooking and now after a couple months of living here I've realized that instead of missing home and the food is to cook myself. It helps with not always getting what you want. Plus, if you do it with friends it's a good bonding and social event. You also don't need to stock the fridge, I've learnt the hard way that...

It's a real shame that some of those attitudes still persist. Mothers should feel comfortable enough to be able to breastfeed where they want. They shouldn't have to hide themselves away to feed those baby naturally.
