I lived in Hainan for a year and a half.  It's the sort of place that is nice for China, but if you compare to international places it doesn't hold up.  I always considered it to be the kind of place that you only go to if you can't afford South East Asia.  Also the temperature in winter is somewhere around 20 degrees.  Not exactly cold, but certainly chilly enough to make...

    Difficult one.

Are people interested in world news?

During the China/UK visit last week, I was amazed by many of the comments about China that were on the various news sites. Lots of people have no idea about China, and they are basing their opinions on biased reporting.

However, of course foreign reporting from within China will be biased. The foreign news teams are more...

Get married in CHina, legalize documents/marriage at your Embassy and after that apply for a

K-3 Visa for Spouse of U.S. Citizen

When a U.S. citizen has married a foreign person, and wishes to bring the spouse to the U.S., a K-3 spouse visa can be applied for. The K-3 visa enables the foreign spouse to live and work in the U.S. while applying for...

My inlaws are super cool. They dont live with us nor do they have any intention of doing so. The brother in law is screwed. They dont visit. 3 years they have seen our house once and it was last week to visit thwir new grandson. They live an hour away. Just want to meet for dinner once a month or so plus holidays.

They make their own money and want nothing from us. They are just...

Off on a slight tangent, but connected to the UK/China state visit.

The Conservative Government in the UK have the mantra of "privitise everything".

They want private sector investment in schools, in healthcare, local Government, security. Their whole policy is based on things being in private ownership. Someone has to make a buck from any service....

China is one massive bubble with 70% of its people's assets locked tight hard in overvalued real estate built with poor quality materials and that is now crumbling apart.

The problem is, China already has an oversupply of living units, so even if the owners want to sell, there will be no one to buy. Foreigners all around the world know of the situation and won't buy any...

The little slip of paper they give you with collection date etc... acts as a temporary passport.  So in theory you can use this to travel inside China, go on trains, plains, stay in hotels etc...  I have only tried it once and it turned out to be more trouble than its worth as most people don't know what it is and wont accept it.

I seriously doubt you could use...

Scans plan sounds really expensive, unless it includes family. Though it does have serious illness and death insurance included.

I'm not a teacher. I'm product manager for a sourcing company. I have a worldwide medical insurance policy through IMG Europe that cost about 7000rmb/year and has very extensive cover. For simple stuff I pay first and claim back. If I need...

actually what is needed is good quality questions about how to get by daily life in China. question that cannot be shot down with the usual "blah blah everything in China is crap", as hard as I find it to come up with such a question, certainly there must be some newcomers to the middle kingdom who are wondering about this and that.

I had no expectations when I first came to China. I have been here for about four and a half years now, with a couple of months each year spent in England just for work. China still surprises me, not always in a good way, but not always in a bad way either. My social life here is good, I have many friends here both foreign and Chinese. What I do find is when I am back in England, which I am...

I think you guys are being too hard on poor katjia melnik.

First of all nobody takes an unpaid internship because they have better options but are too stupid to take a paying job with a future over slave labor paid in experience.

Of course an unpaid internship is less than ideal. But this is a less than ideal world.

    It sucks...

Put it this way. You really need to understand what you're getting into before marrying and not let yourself be blinded by love/lust. A lot of westerners who date locals seem to get caught up in winning over the parents. That's all fine, but you need to vet them as carefully as they're vetting you. If you were Chinese, your parents would be doing just that, so you need to do it for yourself....

    That;s not true!

Baseball is big in a lot of countries. Central/Latin America a lot of places it's the #1 sport, lot of top talent coming from them.

Japan has won 2 of the world baseball classics so far. Korea it's big, even taiwan as well. Regular China fields a team too but they suck.

America actually has never done well...

You don't necessarily need a lawyer. Look closely at your contract, make sure it clearly states that you are paid summer and winter breaks. Don't assume anything, it should be clearly stated.

If your contract clearly states that you are to be paid then send notice to the school give them a week or give them an ultimatum (they may choose to let you go, even universities are...

Yea I admit it, I fell for the Shanghai taxi scam. You know, late at night, heavy suitcases and all, did not sleep on the flight, friendly driver ... takes you about ten kilometers and drops you off ... and you pay some more. Then you stop again. Jiminy. I got mad at the second stop - hey I was exhausted - and complained loudly "I only have 200 rmb, take me home, you $%&#  #$#&...

You've overdone it on the weights. You probably have a high level of visceral fat and a lot of that fat resides in your abdomen. When you strain a lot doing weights sometimes fat or other tissue can push it's way through a weak spot in your abdominal wall. One of the weak sections is near your navel. A hernia near your navel is called an umbilical hernia. Search umbilical hernia to find out...

    (1) make sure the kids like you at all times.
    (2) do your work to the best of your ability.
    (3) don't let the idiocy or futility get to you.
    (4) avoid challenging others' misconceptions.
    (5) expect to be given no respect, then you appreciate what little you do get.
    (6) you are a mercenary not a teacher. if they miss a payment, you'll dance for the competition...

I think, people here don’t really know the ill effects of smoking on kids… today on my way to work, a bike halted right next to me at an intersection… This guy looked like in his early 30s puffing a cig with a very young girl sitting pillion. I wondered if they were related...
