Q: Is the "Aircraft carrier takeoff style pose" the next Gangnam ?

The "Aircraft carrier takeoff style pose" is rife on Chinese internet sites at the moment........is it because of national pride to have an aircraft carrier? Have you done the "Aircraft carrier takeoff style pose" or seen it being done?  I think it is something for Chinese nationals to be proud off as it is only the 10th country in the world to currently have this capability.............I read that China has plans to build two more carriers...do you think China should have aircraft carriers?

It's no big deal having aircraft carriers. I have two in my bathtub. Yellow rubber duckies are harder to find.

Saw it on TV. CCTV that is.

Probably good for national pride, lacks originality, see e.g. http://tebowing.com/

Also, can create mock ups of the Diaoyu islands to attack from the Liaoning aircraft carrier........anyone with capital to invest here?....I can invest one yuan..............

People are going to lose that pride feeling when they discover exactly how much it actually costs to run an aircraft carrier as part of a blue water navy.

national aircraft?  i think they bought it from Ukraine or from some eastern european country.....  or they build it?

mattsm84:

No, it was built in the Ukraine by the USSR and was originally named the Riga. They  however decided to try to sell it after they saw that it wasn't going to meet their standards. Think about that for a minute. The engineering geniuses that gave the world the Trabant, the Yugo and the Volga felt that this carrier was too crummy to be put to any actual use. The Chinese were willing to buy it from them, and for a while entertained the idea of turning the whole thing into a floating casino off Macau. Later they realized that they could use it as leverage in their many, many territorial disputes and began to outfit it as a carrier again.

first of all aircraft carriers style is a meme not a dance. also gangnam style is popular around the world. maybe chinese don't realize this, but aircraft carriers have been around for almost 100 years. my country has like 11 in service. our retired aircraft carriers  ... don't get me started. so this is something that is only special to chinese people. and they better not start any trouble with their neighbors, because there are at least 11 different admirals with plans to sink it if china uses force to steal their territory.

imagine a guy who got a pager 20 years after they were popular. should he brag about it?

(attention young people: google "pager")

raptors:

agreed, it is a meme but I did not mean or said it was a dance? I think some credit must be given that China can refit what the  Ukraine did not want and make it a serviceable carrier. I read that China plans to build/are building two more carriers in the next few years and like it or not, it is an achievement regardless of what the motives are  for having an aircraft carrier. India, Brazil, France, Italy, Russia, etc. all have carriers but nobody thinks these countries intend to attack their neighbours; so why think China intends to? Sometimes, I think there is too much negativity about China; it is just a normal progression for a country to protect itself. Only about 9 other countries have aircraft carriers and this should be regarded as an achievement for a country which 25 years ago was not an economic powerhouse.

crimochina:

maybe you should get out more. china has over 10 territorial disputes. they are claiming land/sea that was never theirs, or that they sign over to other countries. how can you call it an achievement? china claims their history is 2000 years older than anyone else, but they are close to 100 years late to the aircraft carrier party. can you do the math? not only that , it wasn't built from scratch. china relies on stolen designs to build their weapons. why in a country with 1.5 billion people can't they design and build their own? that is pathetic not something to brag about

Anyone can build an argument by quoting one example; why is there dire economic problems in  Europe and the USA whereas a so called developing country as China do not have economic problems and has the most cash reserves in the world...why has China the most advanced high speed trains in the world; are these  valid achievements? And which country do not copy technology from other countries? The British invented many things and were copied by other countries; normal? of course.......And which country with aircraft countries do not have territorial disputes? India has with Pakistan; Russia has numerous disputes; The British with Argentina about the Falkland islands; Japan with many neighbous........so no big deal? It is polite to accept the achievements of others

first of all get your facts straight germany has the most advanced high speed trains in the world. and you think china does not have economic problems?? go for a walk and see the wide income disparity. people who live by picking through trash. schools where students have to sleep on the desks. hell go to the dorms of my university students. and germany, france , swiss along with many other countries are still in good shape. a good example is the usa. if we are really desperate then we would skim from our vast military budget. so we are not desperate. shared or licensed technology is not the same as stolen. but i understand chinese culture, so i know why you would think they are the same. does any of those countries you listed have 11 territorial disputes? does any of them even have 5 . does any of them try to stoke the fires of those disputes. and the falklands are not a territorial dispute. they have been a british colony for a long goddam time. and i bet the people their would rather be british than argentine (actually i'm wrong argentine women ... yes yes yes) japan has 2 territorial disputes not the same as 11. once again ccp logic.

I believe China as an emerging power must have more aircrafts carriers, this is for their good, they are a lot and they need to be strong in different ways whether bought, stolen or whatever they need to build more and more but use them for their own training and exercises only and not to provoke anyone. I personally support them in this

raptors:

totally agree ...... it is already an economic powerhouse and now, everything China does or plans to do attracts interest and scrutiny in the West like an impending outbreak of plague or SARS !!!

I'm actually damn embarrassed and i mean, damn damn embarrassed to see this be national news...it's bad enough we get a second hand article of war 100 years late, but to breed some sort of viral phenomenon out of it is sad.

What's next? We're going to do the Neil Armstrong when we finally get to the moon?

A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
