I've heard there are certain types of fish that eat pretty much anything (and 'anything' in Chinese waters can not be good).
Are there certain fishes I should stay away from in restaurants?
I live in Beijing, btw...

There is enough chemicals and pollution that even the "picky" eating fish contain similar levels of toxins, so there is no "safe" fish. Just eat the ones that you enjoy for the taste and don't worry about the rest.
don't worry. just eat fish as usually. if you upseting with it very much, you could eat fresh fish all the time..
I would try not to eat anything that's come out of a river. That's probably most of the fish available in the markets though. There are rivers around the big cities that, if you should happen to fall in, you have to get shots afterwards. Do you really want to eat a fish that's been swimming around in that kind of water?
Listen, i've been living in BJ for 16 years and i arrived at a time when there was any Jenny Lou's, April's Gourmet and just 1 Carrefour. I've eaten under bridges, in dirty, tinny places, in high class places. I've bought fish in very local markets (not sanyuanli)... in other words, i've tried it all, not only in BJ but all over China and i have never been sick! So just build up your defense system and you'll be able to endure a lot more!
dont eat any fish here even if it comes from a fishery, i have a friend that works at afishery. her job is to change the numbers of the tests results so that everything falls in the accepted ranges.
Don't eat any seafood since the Japanese nuclear leakage poisoned the ocean.I draw a conclusion from the above replies and mine that you shouldn't eat any fish.
I only eat fish from the Sea in Guangdong. A lot of these fish are grown in ponds in China (aquaculture). They throw in antibiotics etc, because the ponds are dirty (full of fishcrap and fish food).
The rivers are polluted. I got some kind of crazy intestinal infection from eating the fish back in 06. I was going to the bathroom 20 times a day. It was awful. I went to the doctor and he said its a condition from eating freshwater fish. My Chinese isn't that good so I never figured out if he was talking about a parasite, or an infection. He told me alot of people in Guangdong have this condition. He gave me some antibiotics and told me they wont help that much. He tsaid my body would kill this eventually. It did, but it took several months.
I've eaten Fish up north (Shanghai, Beijing etc.) but I won't eat any fresh water fish in Guangdong!
All the freshwater fish I've had here tastes like mud, so I don't eat it. Ocean fish here is hit or miss, so I usually opt for sushi because that's fairly easy to tell if it's fresh and decent quality.
Well, I think we pretty much concluded it is all types of fish to be avoided!
Avoid those miniature lobsters they called xiao long xia.....

I have yet to eat what I consider a good tasting fish here in 1 year.
I have no idea what they are when I eat them (Chinese names), I just find they pretty much all taste like crap...not sure why.
Fortunatly where I am there are tons of Japanese restaurants and I find that most sushi here is not bad (salmon, tuna, red snapper etc.), so I stick to this.
Don't eat shark's fin or tuna because they are both endangered species. Tuna also contains high levels of mercury so it shouldn't be eaten that often anyway. Don't eat salmon either because it's all imported and therefore leaves behind a massive carbon footprint!
Blind Mullet lol. If you dont know what it is ask an Aussie......
