Q: Anyone get used to the constant Honking?

I thought N.Y. was bad- but where I am now, it's constant cars/buses/motorbikes honking from morning til night.

Yes, I am used to the honking. However, I'm also lucky enough not to live in a big city.

Yeah, I don't even hear it anymore. Even when I'm getting honked at, it takes me a while to realize it.

It took me a while, but I am used to it now too.
I thought it was stupid all the people honking when I first came here, but over time I realize that it serves an important purpose.
Cars will never stop and I mean NEVER for a pedestrian, so they just lay into the horn to basically say.."get the f**k out of my way if you want to live"
So kind are the drivers here, showing such courtesy.

den:

you are so right dude,...i had to give the finger many times to no avail~

Haha, I thought it was a courtesy thing too, the frequency by which it happens. Then I just figured out that it's continuation on theme of blocking aisles in supermarkets, ignoring queues and not holding doors open for others.

I guess I can say that im used to it because it no longer surprises me, but I am not saying that it doesnt still piss me off. There are many instances when a quick honk is needed because of the lack of road rules, but more often then not its just obnoxious and unnecessary.

Only pedestrians do not honk because they have not discovered air horns yet. and they are the lowest in the totem pole of size among those using streets and roads, so they get honk at.

Here in China, honking is done to signal everyone that following it I will do as I please, and as "The Dude" said, "get the f**k out of my way".

So, get used to it, you will hear it for as long as you are here.  wink

Actually, you know what's worse than the honking? When a driver will flash their high beams at you so you are totally blind and is the least helpful thing possible. I'd rather have the honking. At least I still have my hearing after that.

A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
