Q: Are Chinese people racist?

Not trying to stir shlt up, just honestly curious. I've talked to many of them, and they're always so adamant they're not racist. Yet just as often I've heard openly racist comments made towards blacks or other Asians with darker skin.

-I worked in a city of 3 million in the north. 2 schools I worked for told me they absolutely would not hire "Black" people because they "Have AIDS". True story. Really sad, but true.

-I work with several American Born Chinese men. They get paid less than I do despite the fact that they've been doing the job longer. They are told that they cannot be paid what I get paid because they "don't look like a foreigner". I'm offended for them.

-I taught with a Japanese-American girl 5 years ago who had to hide in the bathroom when the children were dropped off and picked up by parents because according to the school "If the parents see an asian teaching their kids english, they won't keep the kids in the school because they paid for a white person to teach their kids." She lasted about a month before she gave up and went back to the USA.

So pretty much, no they aren't racist at all.. how dare you accuse them of this!! Wink

I hate my own people for this too! Even in Shanghai, the local people look down upon people from other parts of China.

I don't know why do most Chinese think that way. White is better than Black? Foreigner is better than Chinese? This is really ridiculous.

I hate to see a beautiful young Chinese girl walking with an ugly(maybe not ugly), old(maybe not old) foreign guy. No white, no black, no japanese, no korean, this is the my mun's rule for me to pick up bf.

I hate that I do my job much bettter than most of my foreign colleagues, but my boss just wouldn't give me a promotion, cause no Chinese in the company is project manager. Even one stupid American said to another Indonisian coworker that they don't trust Chinese, how stupid he is, that Indonisian is Chinese too, just with Indonisian nationality.

I hate all foreigners.Oh my world, I am racist too!

No that depends. I don't hate all foreigners, I hate the one who doesn't respect, the one who doesn't care. All Black has AIDS? Wow, where is this come from? Chinese(or other people) get AIDS not because of Black people from Africa. I stayed there for 6 months, or shut, am I ADIS positive?

Racist still exsisted today is a humiliation for everyone.

I love how a vast majority of Chinese think that just because a person looks the same that they're somehow of the same nationality. Iv been told "oh, but you're Chinese, just like me, so it's different" in contrast to other foreigners only because people think that I look Chinese. I'm Australian, but at any point i say that to a local and even a few ignorant expats its always "oh.. really?" "well what are you then?" "well, you look very Chinese, so I can't say"

But this comment takes the cake, no wonder I can't get a fair, proper job in this country when there's this sought of mentality.

Sorry xerxes, I really don't know what's wrong here. I can feel that u really don't like whatever I said. If what I said upsad u, I am sorry for that, but here in this place everyone has his/her own opinion, everyone can speak what he/she thinks. And if u don't agree, no problem, u can have ur opinion, but by saying that I am blunt and my answers are premature doesn't help me to understand ur opinion. Yes they are racist but MOSTLY it's not born of hatred. It's the remnants of a terrible education system that has failed them spectacularly, and indoctrinated them to think that China is a superior power to other countries.

Mind you, in this day and age there is absolutely NO EXCUSE for anybody from any country to say things like "All blacks have AIDS".

And Wenna, Indonisian [sic] is NOT Chinese too. Indonesians are Indonesian and have THEIR OWN nationality, separate to that of China.
My British Born Chinese friends may have Chinese parents and look Chinese, but if you ask them they say they are resolutely BRITISH, because they are from that culture and know nothing of (and have no interest in knowing) Chinese culture.

Chinese people have got to get over the fact that just because someone LOOKS Chinese, it doesn't mean they ARE Chinese. Otherwise all the Inuit people in Greenland and Canada would be considered Chinese too, wouldn't they? Or you could say all Japanese and Koreans and Vietnamese are Chinese, because they originated from the same place. WRONG.

See here how heated the whole 'racism' debate can get between Chinese/non-Chinese:

And check the link below to see how racist some Chinese are (see the comments)

I am sorry that I offended so many people. I do have my own opinion and don't say Chinese are racist, better than most western people.
If u r the third generation, don't know anything about ur original country it's fine that u believe what ever u r, but if u just get a new passport and u say I am American or British, I will just feel sick. It's ur choice to believe who u r, and it's my freedom to feel whatever I feel about it.
This whole Chinese blabla just too ridiculous. If u as a foreigner feel so bad here, feel Chinese people are so racist or unfriendly or whatever, go back home!
There is no such Chinese blabla, American blabla, it's just every individual person. Someone treat u bad, and happens he/she is Chinese doesn't mean all Chinese are like that.
Does my English so bad that I didn't express myself well?
I never said a single word to generalize a nation! And please get of these Chinese, foreigner stuff. Someone feel disrespect by being call "Laowai"! Really, just go back where ever u r from!

nevermind:

BETTER THAN WESTERN PEOPLE?! HORSESHIT. I got news for you, lady, go to a western country where racism is not only looked down upon, but tolerance and acceptence are actively taught in schools. You show your stupidity all th etime.

I wish your people would get out of MY country. Can you please tell all your Chinese friends in Canada to go back where they came from? For every laowai in China there is 1000 Chinese in Canada, I guess that's cause China is so great!

I would say most/some (can't make up my mind) Chinese people are. I mean, what's up with the 'CAUCASIANS ONLY' tag on most job ads (whatever kind of job it is from au pair gigs to managerial gigs indecision

If that's NOT racism then I don't know how to correctly put it. frown

Unfortunately, many Chinese are racist and as one poster said, this is born of ignorance, not due to a deep seeded hatred or anything like that. Besides, in a country as homogeneous as China, which was closed off from the outside world for so long and which still has very few foreigners compared with nearby countries such as Thailand and Vietnam (where foreigners are plentiful and in some cases visible even in the smallest towns!) China is something completely different - even in larger cities you are often one of only a handful of foreigners and will stand out - which brings me to the question, why aren't there more foreigners in China, either as tourists or expats, but I digress....

I'm not sure what they teach in those Chinese schools, but when you have parents whispering to their children: "kan, waiguoren!" (look at that foreigner) or some bullshit like "kan, ta de bizi hen da" (look at that foreigner's big nose) even though the child couldn't care less (and who cares about the size of someone's nose anyway...ever heard of rhinoplasty anyone?!), then you gotta ask yourself what's wrong with some Chinese parents or people to be breeding such ignorance...or just wasting their time teaching their children such useless drivel that won't be helpful in any way except for them to grow up and then teach their own children more ignorance and stupidity. If I remember correctly, I couldn't even distinguish the difference between a white and an Asian person when I was 5, but Chinese parents have done an excellent job at making sure their 2-year old kids can scream "helllooooo!!!" at a foreigner from a distance, which is not easy to do when they're short sighted and wearing -8.00 diopter glasses by the time they are 3!

Although for the most part, Chinese people are just curious, but they live with certain ingrained stereotypes and these resonate quite strongly compared to other countries.

kchur:

Why are Chinese people allowed to have excuses when no one else is? Aside from their own plethora of justifications for their behaviour, whitey makes up excuses and apologies for them; like an entire race of Teflon whose every sin is automatically forgiven. I want me one of them god damn unending parades of mitigating circumstances the Chinese seem to have, so I can do whatever the fuck I want too.

kchur: you cant use ignorance as an excuse if you are not ignorant (or the same level of ignorant)

i used to struggle with the question is it better to know or not know?  watching people who are clueless as to what is going on around them and in the world , they seem so much happier. but  after 2 years here in china i realized something after marveling at the vast ignorance in this great land. i would never want to be that person who is left in the dark. even if i'm surrounded by others who are just as ignorant. i dont want to eat poisoned food everyday and get sick from it and not have any idea what is making me sick so i continue to eat the same poisoned foods. i have had times where i felt trapped in a plastic bag, that is not fun.

every gift has it's costs, if you are fortunate enough to be able to see the light than you must understand there is a down side to it. imagine this, you are the only person in the world than can see and talk to ghosts (you are not crazy ) . you get to share in their wisdom learn about things the world doesnt even have a clue about. but there's a downside, you will be thought of as crazy for the rest of your  life. you cant share this experience with anyone not even those closest to you. sometimes being the only one that knows you're right is a-ok.

Excellent comments black. Yes, a lot of the racism by Chinese is due to stupidity and ignorance and I would add prejudice and ethnocentrism. Lastly, as Lud said it's also the result of the terrible Chinese education system. * Unfortunately, China is VERY similar to South Korea regarding xenophobia, ethnocentrism, immaturity, racism, strange behavior, etc.

People everywhere justify their own bad attitudes, no matter the nationality.  Even kchur would justify hating.

Racism is everywhere you can't change the fact or completely make it disappear. It exists on every continent in the world. You just have to live with it and don't make it get you down. It's all a learning experience some racism goes to far and that's why we have fights and arguments with each other.

I am not sure that Chinese people fully understand what racism really is. I believe they think it is an acceptable way of life. Simply put, they don't know any better since they are uneducated in may ways of the modern world.

i probably answered this before but here goes. yes, they are . han chinese are taught from very young to be racist against other ethnic minorities. especially xinjiang , tibetans, mongolians. hans believe they are the only real chinese people.  as a whole they are taught to hate people from other countries. they are taught   that they are superior genetically. they honestly believe this is normal. that all other races/ countries tell themselves the same thing. this shows itself in many silly ways. one friend invited me out to dinner. surprisingly i saw 3 other black americans at the table. neither of us knew each other before . she independently invited all her "black american" friends. in her mind, she probably thinks we need to be around each other in order to be comfortable.

Are Chinese people racist?

Re-phrase that, try Are American people racist?

Are Chinese people racist? Not all of them no. Are most Chinese people racist? Probably, yes.

Are American people racist? Not all of them no. Are most American people racist? Probably, not. Are some American people racist? Probably, yes?

If you tar a whole race as the same you are yourself being racist. imho.

Even between themselves, the Chinese people are very racist.

They think that if Chinese people do not have white skin, then they are from the village and spend most of the time outdoor tending to their crops and therefore acquiredarker a  skin  and because they are from the village they must be poor.

Whilst those who live in the city and who do not go outdoors  and therefore have whiter skins must be quite wealthy.

To the Chinese, white skin is a sign of wealth and dark skin a sign of poverty.

Their own work colleagues try not to associate with them unless they need something and are very critical of them..

I think what is most often considered to be racism from Chinese people is in fact a general "concern" of anything strange. It is not a dislike of other people as much as it is a lack of understanding that China exists in an global community.

A contributing factor to actual racism in China, is that somewhere in the society (don't know if it is education, healthcare or wherever) is someone spreading the word that the Chinese people are physiologically different from other people. If you believe that you are indeed different, and you are told you are superior then that is a pretty good foundation for some good old fashioned xenophobia.

The problem with the global village is all the village idiots.
