Do they honk the horn when you walk on the streets or yell at you? I've seen some public display against locals, but wondering if you've ever been treated poorly by the cops or not.
It's really impossible to tell who is honking and who is not.
the cops usually ride aroung with lights on, so you will behave to they have passed, they dont want to work or do paperwork, sneaking up to catch a criminal with their lights off is something i have never seen in china.
the only cop i saw in China was the one in the office i had to go to when registering. She always had a smile and was friendly. She had some broken english due to the number of foreigners registering. This matched my broken Chinese.
In our City the cops are pretty good and wave to the Kids and have polite to us . I put it down to small town thing but maybe it is because I give them the time of day ?
Thankyou for your very good, half thoughtful, half meaningful question. No why? I don't speak to them, they don't speak to me. I like it like that, I hate cops.
They look so cool and macho on their golf carts and electric bicycles. It's hard to not have total respect for these upholders of law and order.
They're usually pretty nice and cool. They lose most of their confidence when they try to speak English and they tried to understand you but they can't so they give up.
I always found the cops in China friendly, except the time I was attacked by a taxi driver who refused to allow me in his taxi. He actually got out of the taxi and jumped me from behind as I was walking away.
My passport was taken and I was threatened with jail unless I paid the driver's hospital bill (1300 yuan). The cops were far from friendly when a foreigner has defended himself against a Chinese person.
Never had a cop say a word to me, so I guess not friendly, but not rude either. They seem very introverted when it comes to foreigners, they would prefer to avoid confrontation if they can help it so they don't have to speak English.
Always found the police in Nanning friendly and never had a problem with any of them. At last years expo we were getting some food at a stall and a group of about six policemen invited us over to sit with them and share biscuits and water with them. Never had anything like that back in the UK.
I live in Suzhou and I illegally parked about 8;30 on a Sunday night to run into a subway sandwich shop to get a sandwich. I was there about 8 minutes and when I came out two cops were writing tickets to the half dozen cars there. I took mine off the window, smiled at them, and shrugged my shoulders. The older of the two waved me over to him, took the ticket back and said have a nice day. I thought that was pretty cool of him.
Traffic cops tend to be the hardest workers and strictest IMO. The rest of them just hang around on street corners wearing security guard uniforms smoking!
