Q: Are English teachers losers?
Is it true that most English teachers are losers? At the bottom of society? Couldn't find job or girlfriend at home so came to China?
1) English teachers in China are losers. It's true - they are paid (well) to embody the stereotype of the incompetent, privileged westerner. Locals get their revenge for the fictitious injustice by putting them in class with badly behaved young children.
2) Even an unprofessional foreigner can see the myriad problems with Chinese style education, and the appalling English level. So even criminals, drug addicts and psychotics are able to become more productive members of your own society than you.
3) you get to look down on them, pass them ALL off as White Trash people, randomly accuse them of being losers or worse. All the while, your own people remain as incompetent as ever, with the rampant child molestation committed by Chinese only being reported by the news if a hongbao bribe wasn't given.
4) Part of it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. English teachers soon discover that they are valued by their hair, eye & skincolour, not the content of their lessons. They feel professionally deinvested, so they also stop caring. China seems to be synonymous with neglect and avoiding responsibility.
5) Some superficial idiot, who takes his observations entirely at face value, becomes incensed by the situation, blaming it entirely on the influence of evil foreigners of course. Chinese are perfection because they simply will not be held accountable for the consequences of actions that are entirely in their control.
6) And any foreigner who willingly submits to such a dismal situation must be a total loser. Before long, even the most respectable of foreigners will become infected by the trashy behaviour all around him. once you start to emulate the habits of your host country, you'll be a loser even if you weren't before.
This loser has 2 young boys to feed, so I'll let you point, stare and gossip about me, online if need be. I get paid well so you can have that privilege, though I'd rather be picking up trash on the street for the same salary - less humiliating.

You ask idiot questions, of course we can have girl friends back home, If we can't get a girlfriend back home but have many girl friends in China, while Chinese men have no girl friends, how and who is the loser? Why is it so easy to have Chinese girl friends? Is it because Chinese men have the manners of a pig, few have futures and most are butt ugly?

Considering that most English teachers do have a girlfriend and a job, maybe you should reassess where you are in the scheme of things.

Those with experience who know how to avoid crap schools make more than professional expatriates.

And just for the record, I dont hate teachers at all. Lots are awsome, and being one myself for many years, that would be counter productive. You know, I never really considered someone who was able to travel the world and see interesting things (while suffering total morons) as a 'loser... especially at the same time as accumulating a bit of wealth (or travel money) and live in a fairly ok lifestyle - going to restaurants when they feel like it, getting drunk when they feel like it, and sometimes able to pick up when they feel like it.... obviously, we have a different concept of 'loser'.
My life's pretty good. I do the stuff Shining brow talks about...except for picking up chicks.
The only thing that does make me feel like I'm losing out, however, is the fact that there's little in the way of cultural/cerebral stimulation in China. And no sport. Lots of B/S though.

I have a question for you... Can you tell me why it is Chinese people can't give a simple question an honest answer?
Their inability to do this really does drag them down as a race of creditable people.

Answering simple Yes and No may work well with westerners but not in Chinese interpersonal circles. Some questions you can answer Y/N directly, but many you should not, or else you may or would look crude, merciless, bondhead...i also learned the western way very hard

Seriously I don't get how they choose what to delete and what to keep.
I don't know about other teachers but i'm a major loser, I gave up a cold climate back home and a shitty wage for long long hours (like your job maybe) only to work three hours a day and earn more than 80% of the population and get stuck with a wife 15 years younger than me. Life sucks.
I'll give you a good example of a loser: someone whose life sucks, and who does nothing to try and change it.
If you can't make it anywhere except as an English teacher, then you aren't a loser for taking that job; that makes you a success. You need to take what life has handed to you, and make something out of it. Go where you can make it. Go where you can be happy.
The only loser is he or she who doesn't do anything to change their situation. Being an English teacher gave me one of the best times of my life... other than being kicked and punched in the balls on a regular basis by the students... sigh.
Regardless, a job is a job. If you can find a good job that doesn't hurt people, and you can raise a family off that job, then more power to you. You deserve it. Work at it, and don't listen to what anything that the fucknuggets have to say about your happiness. They're jealous.

Only if you make yourself a loser. Actions speak louder than words. You make yourself who you are. So making the point: Being an English teacher is a great job, and doesn't make you a loser, only your actions and laziness can make you a loser.
A real loser is somebody who tries to provoke a response in an Internet forum by insulting people then watching the responses, hiding behind anonymity. You are even more of a loser than the other idiots who have done the same thing.
If you re teaching english, your kids enjoy it and are learning english, how is that not a productive life? The only people that would not be losers in your definition are people sent here by foreign companies and have expat packages. I suspect few of them use this forum. Everybody that works outside of education and doesn't have an expat salary will earn less than foreign teachers. I suspect there are a few people lying about being teachers because they re especially sad. The others earn less than an english teacher would in shanghai.

I don't know where you get that from. In my social circle there are very few teachers. Most foreigners I know are traders, Engineers or doing stuff for foreign companies. I only know one "co-orporate ex-pat", and he is going home soon. I don't think I know anyone who would be here for 10k RMB a month.

My point being unless you ve been headhunted by a chinese company or sent over by a foreign firm its unlikely you earn more than a foreign teacher in shanghai (can be 17,000 to 21,000). These people are not likely to be so pathetic as go on a forum and belittle english teachers. it means this poster and others are double losers for pretending they are not english teacher and earn alot more than one. doubt many properly educated engineers spell the way that some of the more provocative posters have done.
There are a lot of losers as you told. You will see some old guys , bus drivers, high school graduates and some drug users who can not find better jobs than English teaching jobs.
Some losers come to china and act cool.
On the other hand there are real teachers who come to china with a good education background with a dignity.
I find this statement (which by the way is not original as especially during the first half of the last year there were a lot of news and TV shows calling all foreigners in China loosers and trash) quite hillarious and always wonder why Chinese, who really believe this, are so masochistic and so incredibly selfcritical.
If the total looser in one country can come into the another country and immediatelly gets a salary which is several times above the average level, excel in her/his job, has no trouble with a social life and provided he is a man so also get a lot of girlfriends opportunities then this all can lead just to one conclusion - such a person is well above average in the new environment. 
Well I do not think that all foreigners are above average in China but I also do not believe they are all under average - but that's already another discussion

Even Chinese ourselves don't believe that completely, why should you take it seriously :) You can choose to tell us the real reason why you came to China, or keep silent. Always remember that we are a country of big population, so not really some one will care... Everyone takes care of themselves (many times we are seen as selfish and closeminded etc etc:))
I always get annoyed with this question...It's not like America needs that many qualified ESL/EFL teachers anyway. What else do you do with a Foreign Language degree and a CELTA? Work in Peru?
