Q: Are most foreigners in China in their twenties?

I am 41. A lot of expats I talk to in China are in their 20s, just out of school. Are most of the expats youngsters? I'll be... gramma to a bunch of them! haha

If you're talking about teachers then yes, most are young and out of school. Expats in other fields are normally much older (between companies only wanted to paid the expat prices for those with years of experience and many have to show so much proof of experience to be able to have a visa in said field.

Over 50 % of the Westerners I see are noticeably older than 40. I usually just see a bunch of tourists. No long term residents.

If you're a student you're most likely in your 20's. This plus expats in their 20's with jobs puts the odds up against the older expats.

here in shanghai, i'd say since they go to school here. seldom i encounter someone in his/her 20's who's doing a pretty nice job here, either they are in internship or cheap labour as they say, or just taking part time job while enjoying their trip here

the majority I would say so...because they could be here for school..or teaching or whatever. If anything more people that are in their 20's are probably gonna stay here the longest...

Yes, I graduated college, tried to find a job for a year with little success so I came here to gain experience (both work and life experience).  I imagine many are in the same boat as me.  I figure I can establish my American life later.

I would say in general, a large portion are younger. I'm one of those youngsters. cheeky

However, in this city, there aren't many young expats. The ones I met were all middle aged, and one was much older. I thought that was a bit odd. However, this is a small city that no one has ever heard of, so I guess that explains it.

Judging from what I have read on various sites and forums, it appears about 2/3 are 20 somethings and 1/3 over 40 somethings.  Older expats tend to stereotype the younger ones, and the younger ones tend to stereotype Chinese girls, which in turn pisses off most older expats (especially married ones)....just an observation.surprise
Where do I fit in if I am in my mid 30's and not a teacher?crying

Where I am, Nanning, most expats I see here are older than me, and I am 58.
I have met a couple of guys in their twenties, but generally it all seems to be older guys.

A: Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever
A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
