It can be funny, it can frustrating or serious...but what, from your experience, is the biggest misconception people have as soon as they see/talk to you (as a foreigner)?
A few of mine: that I speak Chinese (I'm an ABC and I don't speak Mandarin) and when they finally realize I'm not Chinese, the belief that I came 'back' to China for good. Also, that my parents are incredibly rich.
I'd say the most common are that I'm a Western playboy loser who couldn't cut it in America so I came to China specifically for the purpose of impregnating innocent Chinese girls. A guy at an English party actually said that to my face.
about who ? foreigners ? i think you feel too special for youself. whatever foreignesr or strangers people always have misconception with them. so don't worry about this trifles, communicate with others, they will understand you and more familiarly with you.
Well, I'm from the US, so the first thing I always get is "Do you own a gun?" because ALL Americans own guns.
Of course, the answer is yes, I have 6, but not with me in China... I do know plenty of Americans who don't own guns, so this is a misconception.
Where do I start?
1) All foreigners are stupid
2) I am foreign and thus American, and thus friends with Obama.
OR
If India is being complained about in the news I am from India, and thus friends with India Chairman Obama. Or if Romania is in the news or whatever friggin country Obama is chairman of this week, etc.
3) All people who are not Chinese, Korean or Japanese speak English, and really want to be bothered about English all the time.
4) I am "outgoing", like all foreigner. (god damnit)
5) I am "selang", like all foreigner.
6) I like to give two thumbs up and scream "oh yay" like all foreigner.
7) I am Bill Gates-rich and it doesn't matter if I waste or am scammed out of money
8) I am friendly (I hate that one the most)
9) My foreigner country has only 2-3 years of history and I have no tradition to draw from (I have two degrees in history so this one pisses me off the second most)
10) Me and Obama personally caused every problem in China.
11) I don't speak Chinese, like all foreigner, and thus can't understand them when they tell horrible jokes in front of me or scream insults at me.
12) I only eat hamburgers and chickenburgers. At business dinners I have been told not to eat such things as carrots because "you no have in your country. foreigner not like". As if carrots were a refined taste that just couldn't be appreciated by a barbarian, who would vomit if he ate something so exotic.
13) Foreigners hate their own countries and are jealous of China. China is the only country with anything like October first because the rest of us have nothing to be proud about.
14) I kiss and hug everyone.
I could go on. Basically, every foreigner is an outgoing friendly evil monkey who is jealous of China and causes all of China's problems.
kchur: are foreigners to blame for their misconceptions or is it a result of their ignorance????????
many people here sadly are ignorant and cant grasp simple ideas such as each person is a individually and only represents themselves. just because you meet one american that drink 3 cups of coffee a day it does not mean every f---ing foreigner drinks 3 cups of coffee a day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it seems many chinese especially han are taught to consider themselves human and everyone else is less than human
their own ignorance not having to do with anything else
because no one is perfect. if i took one of your flaws and attributed it to everyone with your skin color is it your fault or my ignorance????
Pains me to say, but Kchur made some very true points...
