Q: Buying a new computer online or to HK ?

It pretty much sums it up in the title, i want to buy a new computer, windows not Apple, I'm just wondering what are my best options, online or Hong Kong ?

Not sure if it’d make any difference but i’m looking for a gamer’s type laptop, no favorite brand, would just like good graphics and a good lifespan for my new computer. Being presented or not the computer makes little difference to me as anyway i wouldn’t know anything before actually trying it out.

HK prices are higher than the states. But whatever you do don't buy from street shops, they're known scammers. Buy only from chain shops.

I have bought five computers in China. The one I bought on Amazon is good, but came with an unlicensed (and, of course, Chinese) OS. I installed Windows, and had a hard time finding the correct drivers. I bought a Lenovo/ThinkPad laptop on Taobao that was advertised as new. It is an obvious rehab, has no webcam, and came with an unlicensed OS. I’ve had no problems at all with the Lenovo systems I bought for my wife from an official Lenovo dealer at the city’s best computer center. I also had a good experience at a build-you-own system shop.

There is no compelling reason not to buy in China (assuming you can cope with a Chinese OS) – but buy from a reputable dealer, not from Taobao!

However, if you are going to the US soon, buy the compter there. It's probably cheaper. I actually had a tablet sent to me from the US. Even after paying customs duties, it was cheaper than buying the same system here.

You contradicted yourself. No compelling reason? But paying a 1000 to 2000rmb more is compelling.

As Scahtz has indicated, you can get some good (safe) computers here. One of my mates bought himself one through JD.com (or was it one of the Taobao stores??) - but either way, it was an 'official' retailer..

If you go into a shop... some will be good, some will rip you off! There is software out there to tell you exactly what your system has - including the real manufacturer (or, at least, who it's not!)

A:I had a similar experience in HK. If I recall correctly, before or at the Z visa application, I had to submit ME from the ordinary HK clinic, where I explained why I need ME and I asked them to examine only necessary things (I don't remember the cost ...), and then ... I got Z stamp and when back in China, I had to complete another RP ME, which was on the employer, i.e. included in the Contract ...We've never discussed refund of payment for HK ME with my employer. Year 2013 ...I'd say, that is a regular thingy embassies around the world require, before issuing visas for LT stay in the country. "Vladimir Vladimiro-Witch ras-Putin" (LOL@your pronunciation ..) demands the same thingy before granting LT stay in Ruski.  ... Haa, 2013 was the Snowden's year. I was in Kowloon at the time of his landing .. with all these files ... I'm-Still-in-LMAO-State ... Cost for the ME in HK was around HK$ 2000/200 EUR, and ME was kind of swift, quicker and way shorter than on the mainland ... -- icnif77
