Q: Can I own a motor cycle in the City like Shanghai?

I use to have a motorcycle Kawasaki Ninja in USA.....really miss it.  Can motorcycles be owned and driven in the city like Shanghai?  IF so, what are the requirements ?  I get lost in the subway as I am a total newbie to China life......

Highly unlikely. From what I heard it's banned inside the inner ring roads.

However maybe John Huntsman , the former US ambassador in China didn't have to observe this regulation.

But seriously, I think taking subway is a lot easier than reading the map and driving yourself !

At a minimum, you'd need to get a Chinese driving license for motorcycles.  The test is exactly the same as for those wishing to drive a car in China, but with additional motorcycle specific questions.  The test is not easy, and would likely require lots of studying and preparation to pass.

That's assuming the operation of a motorcycle is even allowed where you live in Shanghai, and that obtaining a license plate for it is feasible (last I saw, getting a license plate for a car in Shanghai was fetching 80k rmb at auction, yikes).

the accident rates are 3 times higher than america with half the cars of america, so your six times as likely to have an accident here. after getting license and plate , insurance is 400 to 1000rmb a year depending on city and covers you to 250,000 damages.

i would recommend you check to see if your life insurance has coverage for foreign termination also. good luck.

Lol, well riding a motorcycle isnt much of a problem here.. I have a harley davidson and am selling it now. Wanna change to the new indian chief. But depends how strong a heart you have, if you arent scared of the documents etc. and are a careful rider, no issues at all. I been riding for 6  years all around china, and have almost 20 000 miles (no documents) clocked didnt get in any problems.
