Q: Is China really a good place to raise a family?

My girlfriend of 3 years is Chinese. I have a job in Beijing. Everything seems to indicate to me staying here in the future, however the thought of getting married and raising a family here just doesn't seem worth it. The pollution alone seems to be enough of a reason.

Anyone have this similar type of conundrum? Decent job, stable romantic life, just hating the place?

Smile ....... wow you are thinking of raising family in beijing... look if you keep tracking on the problems like pollution , clean water, good education , perfect new world ......... thats 100% impossible
but you can do something for perfection.. any place can be good having the basic faculities provided for childrens... the important think is what you think , how you and you wife wants to rise them... whatever place you choose..
normal pollution is all over our world........... best of luck Smile

If you live in a big city then I think China could be as good of place as any to raise a family. Since your kids would be 1/2 and 1/2 I think you should raise them (at least part of the time) in China so they can be in touch with part of who they are. If you just get on a plane and raise them in your home country they will miss a lot. Also consider the following advantages of raising in China.

1) They can easily learn Chinese (a language that will no doubt be useful later in their life)
2) Currently major cities are fairly safe places

Can you? Yes.
Should you? That's a better question.

A:I had a similar experience in HK. If I recall correctly, before or at the Z visa application, I had to submit ME from the ordinary HK clinic, where I explained why I need ME and I asked them to examine only necessary things (I don't remember the cost ...), and then ... I got Z stamp and when back in China, I had to complete another RP ME, which was on the employer, i.e. included in the Contract ...We've never discussed refund of payment for HK ME with my employer. Year 2013 ...I'd say, that is a regular thingy embassies around the world require, before issuing visas for LT stay in the country. "Vladimir Vladimiro-Witch ras-Putin" (LOL@your pronunciation ..) demands the same thingy before granting LT stay in Ruski.  ... Haa, 2013 was the Snowden's year. I was in Kowloon at the time of his landing .. with all these files ... I'm-Still-in-LMAO-State ... Cost for the ME in HK was around HK$ 2000/200 EUR, and ME was kind of swift, quicker and way shorter than on the mainland ... -- icnif77
