Q: China on the Rise? BBC News

Asia will wield more global power than the US and Europe combined by 2030, a forecast from the US intelligence community has found.

Within two decades China will overtake the US as the world's largest economy, the report adds. It also warns of slower growth and falling living standards in advanced nations with ageing populations.

The NIC suggests that by 2030, Asia will have more "overall power" than the US and Europe combined - taking into account population size, gross domestic product (GDP), military spending and investment in technology.

"China alone will probably have the largest economy, surpassing that of the United States a few years before 2030," the report says.

But the report says it does not anticipate that China will emerge as a superpower in the mould of the US, forging coalitions to take on international issues.

Opinions are like numbers on the roulette wheel.  Eventually one of them has to hit.

People predict the boom to go on forever.  Others predict the economy to just go boom.  The time to worry is when everyone agrees on a situation.

Not sure why you associate the rise of China with "worry" ...no  Care to elaborate?

Xpat.John:

You read my comment wrong.  I did not associate the word "worry" with the "rise of China".  I said that people should worry if everyone agrees on the same thing, whatever that thing is.

Is China on the rise?  Anyone with eyes can see that it is.  But is that rise tofu construction or is it built to last.  Unfortunately, I think it is not going to last.  There is no transparency in the Chinese banking or governmental systems so the numbers that are being given out could have no basis in reality.

I can drive up in a million dollar car and show you pictures of my 10 million dollar home, but without real proof, it means nothing.  I could have stolen the car and taken the photos off of the internet.

People too easily get blinded by what they hear and see.  They don't even try to look at the bigger picture to see what is real and what is not.

China is only on the rise to dimwitted fools who think money means everything. In less than ten years China is going to have a major economic breakdown and subsequent violent revolution in its southern provinces.

The instability will have foreign companies fleeing and China will implode.

nevermind - The opinion that started this thread is based on substantial numbers and informed perspectives from credible academics and other mavens.  What, exactly, is your opinion based on?

Traveler:

As you said, it is only an opinion, based on the current status quo not changing, and China successfully undergoing significant reform.

The report also says that if that reform is not successful, which is highly possible, then the scenario stated will be substantially different.

Either way, it will not be the same China we have today, which is unworkable for the long term future.

But again, as you say, this report is just an opinion. It is one of dozens of conflicting opinions being thrown around by equally and more highly regarded organisations.

It is also near impossible to make accurate predictions, when China is incapable of providing accurate figures and information about it's true current state of affairs.
