Driving by the CCTV building (Beijing) in a cab, I always ask the driver if they like it, and they respond that it is the ugliest building in Beijing.
Do you think that china's recent wave of "super modern" looking buildings is beautify or god-awful ugly?
The Eiffel Tower used to be thought of as the ugly mess that ruined the Paris skyline and look how that has changed in the hearts and minds of the people. So tacky buildings have worked for cities in the past.
I love the building. But, then again, I am a designer. However there are some other "modern" buildings in China i really dislike. A whole slew of them in Xiamen when i visited last week.
One of my students told me during one of our lessons where we discussed globalization that for him the big buildings had destroyed China . I was very shocked to hear . He said he thought it represented losing traditions . I don't think that's true , though . I told him that where my apartment building now is I'm sure there used to be those traditional Chinese houses with the pointy roofs. For the national holiday our building strung the traditional red , Chinese lanterns across the courtyard , just as people have always done . Different building , same tradition . Nothing wrong with updating imho ...
CCTV building is definitely ugly. If ppl ever built it in an relatively open area, I wont think it will look that ugly both in the daytime and at night.
SLT Village before it's open was considered ugly too, but since they got many fashion ppl around, it looks not so bad now. The north area is ok too, but the center square is on downstair isn't a smart choice.
All Soho buildings are ugly to death, not only because they copy style from London and Newyork buildings, but also because their business tactic is a totally fail.
Bird's nest and Water Cube look beautiful at night. (actually that area is much better than CBD area, my personal taste)...
both Yintai and the tallest guomao sanxi are ugly (I especially hate the environment of yintai)
New planetarium and Nwe science and technology museum both are not bad.
I peronally only like architecture in the open fields.
I noticed that the few buildings I do really like look suspiciously similar to building designs in Dubai.
